The Plano Rotary Club guest speaker for October 7th is author Jill Brandenburg “Why You Can’t Just Be Positive Your Way Through Life”

We’ve all heard the familiar advice: “Just stay positive,” “Look on the bright side,” or “Everything happens for a reason.” While these words are often spoken with good intentions, they can sometimes do more harm than good.

Through humor, engaging storytelling, and relatable real-life experiences, Jill Brandenburg explores the concept of toxic positivity—the belief that we should maintain a positive attitude regardless of the challenges, struggles, or emotions we face.

Jill reminds us that life isn’t always sunshine and rainbows. Sometimes people don’t need encouragement to smile or look for the silver lining. They simply need someone willing to listen, understand, and acknowledge what they’re going through.

Her presentation challenges audiences to rethink how they respond to adversity, support friends and family, and communicate with greater empathy and authenticity.

The takeaway? Being positive is wonderful, but being present, compassionate, and understanding can be far more powerful.

Sometimes the best thing we can say isn’t “Everything will be okay,” but simply “I’m here for you.”
