Our Eagle Scouts, seniors Lucas and George from Troop 54 join 11th grade Senior Girl Scout Makenzie from Troop 67065 in Danielson to present the colors this morning for the opening ceremonies at the Ellis Tech Field Day 2026!
Lucas and George and several other Eagle Scouts will be graduating from H H Ellis Technical High School this year. Lucas and George are in the Architecture and Precision Machining trades and will pursue these careers as they continue down the trail on their next adventure. H H Ellis Tech, named for Silver Beaver Recipient Harvard H Ellis, is thankful for our scouts who lead the color guard and welcomes them to wear the Eagle Honor cords at the graduation ceremony in a week.

Troop 54 has had a busy Saturday! We planted and dedicated a new tree in Veteran’s Park to commemorate our nations 250th anniversary, then did a combined 5 mile backpacking hike through Pachaug Forest to Camp Maria where we worked on individual advancements. Scouts identified plants and animals - invasive and nonnative, patrols picked camping sites for safety and camp cooking!

Tonight members of our Warriors of the Waves Patrol worked with Plainfield Pack 111 to teach fishing skills and help the cubs prepare for this weekend’s camp out at the Barry Grant Memorial Fishing Derby at June Norcross Webster Scout Reservation! These three Scouts are one step closer to earning the Complete Angler Award, and tonight SPL Matthew completed the requirements! Great job scouts!

🌟 Volunteer Spotlight — George Blanchette🌟

Today, we recognize George Blanchette of Troop 54.

Some volunteers seek recognition. Others quietly become the foundation that keeps Scouting moving forward. George is one of those people.

On multiple occasions, George stepped forward when no one else would. When challenges arose, when leadership gaps appeared, and when the future of Troop 54 was uncertain, he answered the call without hesitation. Time and again, he has been the steady hand and dependable presence that helped keep the troop strong.

What makes George’s service especially meaningful is that he has done it without asking for praise, attention, or acknowledgment. Despite facing criticism and difficult moments along the way, he continued showing up for the Scouts, the troop, and the mission of Scouting.

Since his son crossed over into the troop, George has become a constant source of support and stability — the kind of volunteer every unit hopes to have, but few are fortunate enough to find.

The Stephen Averill Avery Award exists to recognize the quiet heroes of Scouting: the volunteers who work behind the scenes, step up when needed most, and make an impact through dedication rather than recognition. George Blanchette embodies that spirit.

Thank you, George, for your unwavering commitment to the youth of Troop 54 and to Scouting in our community.

Another Scout Sunday Service! Some of our Scouts are members of Abington Congregational Church, which also hosted a special Scout Sunday Service on February 22nd, coinciding with Lord Baden-Powell’s 169th birthday! The scouts presented the colors and opened with the Scout Oath and the Scout Law. Even Pastor Bruce got in on the fun in uniform! Currently there arent any Scouting America Troops in Pomfret, but there are Scouts from Pomfret being successful in almost all the other area units!
Abington Church is the oldest continuously used meeting house in the state, built in 1751, and looks to celebrate their 275th anniversary this fall!

February is the month that scouts traditionally focus on the 12th point of the scout law, Reverent, by working with houses of worship to celebrate Scout Sunday! Troop 54 is charted through St. Andre Besette Parish and this morning members of the troop, and their families, celebrated with Father Greg and the parish at St. John the Apostle’s sanctuary. Scouts were escorted in by Father Gregg and were able to do readings. Our Chaplin’s Aid read an excert from Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians about everyone having a part.

Scouting is built on that same truth. It’s open to all—different backgrounds, talents, and stories—each person bringing something unique, yet all moving forward together.

The 12 points of the Scout Law aren’t just rules; they’re values that bind us as one body: trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.

As our leaders said we do great things, helping the youth of America grow into their best possible self Working together with the scout law , they shape character, strengthen community, and remind us that everyone has a place—and a purpose—in Scouting. ⚜️
