Monday Night Troop 54, along with Troop 90, helped out at the Pack 111 Halloween Party! 54 provided each cub with a pumpkin to take home. It was awesome to see so many Cub Scouts! The troop SPL’s sported their best Halloween costumes, 54’s as a Ghostbuster and 90’s as Top Gun, along with all the cubbies in costume. Pack 111 leadership didn’t just ‘Do (their) best’ - since many collaborated on a Pokémon theme, complete with Ash, Nurse Jenny, Jesse and James, even Moltres, they ‘Did their VERY Best, like no one ever was..!

Troop 54 and Last Green Valley Walktober events
Plainfield Cemetery Hosted by Gray Ledge Tree Farm and Troop 54
Mr Gray lead this Walktober event with cosponsor Troop 54 and the Plainfield Historical Society
As Mr Gray lead the walk around the Plainfield Cemetery the scouts each had a prepared reading on the historical significance of those laid to rest or the markers that memorialized a Plainfield Military Unit. Topics included the historical significance of General Rochambeau’s March and camps in Plainfield to the Civil War Soldiers, including some who served in the 29th Connecticut Regiment made up of African American Soldiers. Scouts visited the resting site of Major Andrews Backus who was in command of 200 able bodied young Plainfield men who responded to the call at Lexington and Concord. Mr. Gray said it was the most successful walk he has lead, and then in the repeat in the afternoon there were more attendees!

Pomfret Closing Ceremonies of the Walktober 250th Weekend
Our Scouts were called to serve laying a wreath and playing taps at the old Abington Burial Grounds just off route 97. These hallowed grounds are the resting place for 60 known American Revolution veterans. The cemetery features some of revolutionary New England signature stone carvers, and one is one of our regions nicest historical graveyards found in the rural Abington section of Pomfret. Our chaplain’s aid Nathan laid the wreath and SPL Matthew played Taps at the culmination of the presentation that included re-enactors firing a musket salute, and others in historic clothing telling stories passed down in the generations about the day their ancestors were called to serve in the war for independence. We were delighted to meet up with fellow 54 member, JNWSR Director and State representative Pat Boyd.
All around we had a very revolutionary time in northeast Connecticut earning the Historic Trails Award and learning a lot about our regions history.

Tonight Troop 54 celebrated our fall Court of Honor! 49 merit badges awarded, 6 ranks, and 3 special opportunities given out!
Also a moment to celebrate the legacy of our retiring Assistant Scoutmaster Mr. Jeff Savoie who celebrated over 18 years of service to the community of Plainfield through all levels of scouting. Jeff certainly has left his mark on Troop 54.
Milestones of note from tonight- the entire troop now has earned the eagle required merit badges of Camping and Personnel Fitness, AND the regular badge Disabilities Awareness! Also our SPL Matthew Carter was awarded his 104th merit badge!
Great job scouts!

SPL Matthew volunteered all throughout The Wall that Heals. Today at the conclusion of the closing ceremony, in the rain, he did the final Taps of the event. Matthew played Tuesday through Saturday night either at the conclusion of a ceremony or at dusk and today at 2pm.
Matthew hopes to earn the bugling merit badge, the rarest of all of the current 143 badges. We believe he is well on his way.

Plainfield Troop 54 Scout volunteers at the Wall That Heals in Putnam

A Scout is Helpful. A Scout is Reverent.

On Wednesday, September 9, 2026, Putnam, Connecticut, our Senior Patrol Leader Matthew Carter answered the call to serve as the bugler to play Taps at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund Wall That Heals at Murphy Park in Putnam. The Wall That Heals is a three-quarter scale traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC. It contains 58,281 names of those who were lost in the Vietnam War.
Matthew played Wednesday night, in the rain. Not for a large crowd but for those few present and for the memorial itself. When asked what it means to serve his community in this way Matthew simply explained “People I know -know names on the wall, or know someone who does. And I want to be helpful.”

We made it to the top! Mt Cardigan was conquered one step at a time by our scouts! Staying at the Application Mountain Club property, we hiked the Holt Trail and the Clark Trail to the summit! At the top the Fire Tower was open for visitors and the fire warden gave us an extended tour as he’s an Eagle Scout! S’mores and fellowship after dinner, along with a competitive game of UNO, this was another great adventure with Troop 54!

Today members of Troop 54 Plainfield traveled to Lithuania- actually the small part of Lithuania that’s in Ashford this week.
The Lithuanian Scouting Association, part of Scouting America, is at June Norcross Webster Scout Reservation this week and our scouts and leaders were asked to help out! Our Leader Mr. Carter presented parts of the merit badge Signs, Signals and Codes tailored to the Lithuanian Scouts and their leaders. Our scouts that attended all have the signs signals and code merit badge and were able to assist be Lithuanian Scouts learning Morse code and semaphore flag language.
Our scouts were able to have a meal with the visiting scouts featuring delicious traditional Lithuanian food, followed by songs of fellowship. This was a great international experience that our scouts look forward to volunteering at again next year!

Yesterday two members of our Warriors of the Waves patrol, accompanied by adult leader Mr. Carter, attended June Norcross Webster Scout Reservation’s week 7 trip white water rafting! They’re pictured in our fashionable Green quick dry Class B activity tee shirts!
They traveled from camp by bus to Deerfield Massachusetts, into the foothills of the Berkshires, to take on class 3 rapids over a seven mile trip! Our participating scouts earned the whitewater rafting experience award, and plan to take the whitewater merit badge next summer at JNW! We cannot say enough great things about this experience and our camp. Our scouts worked as a team, ‘rode the bull’- riding on the nose of the raft through class 2 rapids, had a balance contest walking on the perimeter of the raft, and won the splash war with the other rafts! We also experienced the highs and lows of New England weather with warm sun and heavy rain on the river. Plainfield Scouts started and ended summer with JNW, but summers not over yet! There are still some awesome adventures ahead with Troop 54!
