Congratulations to a dedicated advocate and friend to SO MANY over the years! You have touched many lives including our clients. Thank you Miller and may God bless you as you transition into another phase of life in retirement! Enjoy!

For thirty-five years, the state of Alabama has reaped the benefits of Miller Piggott’s dedication through her tireless efforts to support families affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Miller founded Alzheimer’s of Central Alabama (ACA) in 1992 and has served as its sole executive director since 1997, overseeing its mission to support persons who are living with dementia through tangible means, to provide funding for Alzheimer’s research at the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB), to promote advocacy, and to provide community education.

It is with sadness that the Board of Directors of Alzheimer’s of Central Alabama (ACA) announces that Miller Piggott, MSW, will retire as executive director at the end of the year 2025. However, we, along with the staff at ACA and the multitude of families whose lives she has touched, celebrate all that she has accomplished and wish her well.

Prior to, and during part of her tenure at ACA, Miller, a social worker by training, served as Education Director in the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center. It was during her time at UAB that she was encouraged by the support group she facilitated to found and develop ACA. Since its inception Miller has shepherded ACA through continued growth and solidified its standing within the Alzheimer’s community in the state of Alabama. Initially founded to serve the area of central Alabama, ACA now serves families statewide. As of the end of October, 358 families have received scholarships for respite care, continence supplies, and nutritional aid from ACA this year.

The care and compassion that Miller brought to the Alzheimer’s community will be greatly missed. The legacy she leaves behind is strong, and the future of ACA will lean into that strength moving forward. Thank you, Miller!

Plans can cover supplemental benefits that are not primarily health-related for enrollees who have chronic illnesses. These benefits can address social determinants of health for people with chronic disease. A social determinant of health is a part of someone’s life that can affect their health in some way. Examples of the kind of benefit that plans can cover are:

• Meal delivery
• Transportation for non-medical needs
• Home air cleaners
• Pest control
• Heart-healthy food or produce

To be eligible, you must be chronically ill. If you meet the criteria, a Medicare Advantage plan may offer you one of these benefits.
