Attention Relatives

There will be an expected delay in traffic on highway 18 by Mahpiya Luta Owayawa tomorrow October 16th starting at 10:00am for their homecoming parade.
Please use caution when traveling through this area as there will be a delay in traffic while the parade is going on.

Our FY2026 has come to a close and we would like to say Thank You to all the parents/guardians that received a car seat from our program. We would like to also say Thank You to the Sacred Heart Church, Sharps Corner Baptist Church, Brother Rene Hall, Lil Angel's store, and Allen CAP Office for allowing us to hold Car Seat Clinics in your parking lots. Importantly, we are thankful for the Occupant Protection Grant that is provided to us from the BIA Indian Highway Safety.

We would like to share the following data with the public:

Motor Vehicle Crashes (with children under age 12 as passengers)
FY2021: 7 (6 unrestrained)
FY2022: 19 (16 unrestrained)
FY2023: 23 (13 unrestrained)

FY2025: 8 (7 unrestrained)
FY2026: 23 (21 unrestrained)

Additionally, we would like to remind the public that Ordinance 19-43.3 Child Passenger Seat is a primary law on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation which carries a $250 fine per child that is not secured in a car seat.

We currently do not have any car seats in stock. We will update the public when we receive more seats. Please continue to buckle up your loved ones, yourselves and drive safe!

Reminder to the public:

Please stop for the buses when the red lights are on. They are either loading or unloading children. It is very dangerous to pass school buses while they are stopped.
Set your alarms 15 minutes earlier and start your day earlier.

Call dispatch 867-5111 or 911 to report any reckless drivers that do not stop for school buses.

Ordinance 614-Stopping for school buses is a $100 fine
Ordinance 604 - Reckless Driving is a $350 fine

Today, September 26th is Seat Check Saturday. We want to remind all the parents and guardians of our sacred wakanyeja that it is very important to check that your children's car seats are safe. All car seats have a registration card that you fill out and mail back to the manufacturer, so that if there is a recall, they can notify you immediately. If you have purchased a seat on your own, please make sure to fill out the registration card and put in the mail.
This fiscal year, OSTDPS Highway safety has distributed 272 child safety seats for parents and caregivers on the reservation through our BIA IHSP Occupant Protection grant. That is the largest amount of seats we have distributed so far. For those families that received a seat from us, we have mailed in the registration cards for you.
We also want to say Thank You to the parents that received a seat from us.

Seat Checks are important because it is dangerous to use a seat that has been recalled. To check the model of your car seat, there is a sticker under the seat, that also shows the manufacture date.

Attention Relatives

September 20th thru 26th is Child Passenger Safety Week

We would like to remind the Oyate that there is a primary law on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, and it is Ordinance 19-43.3 which requires all children to be safely secured in a car seat. It is a $250 fine for each child that is not secured in a car seat.

OSTDPS Highway Safety will be holding a final car seat clinic TODAY, September 23rd starting at 1:00pm at the Sacred Heart Church Parking Lot in Pine Ridge. So stop by the B.A.T. Mobile and see Terra or Kimimila.

Good day relatives

OSTDPS Highway Safety completed the national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over mobilization from August 19th through September 7th which focuses on impaired drivers.
During the mobilization, the following data was recorded from entire dept:

MOTOR VEHICLE CRASHES:
Fatalities: 0
Crashes: 20
Injury Crashes: 3

ARRESTS:
DWI-DUI: 15
Drug: 13
Felony: 0
Warrants served: 54

CITATIONS:
Safety Belt: 41
Child Passenger Safety: 3
Suspended/Revoked License: 2
Speeding: 78
Reckless Driving: 7
Other Traffic Citations: 51
Stolen Vehicles Recovered: 1

Additionally, there was 2 sobriety checkpoints as well as three Child Passenger Seat Clinics held during the mobilization.

We encourage the Oyate to always look out for each other, report any impaired drivers to OSTDPS at 867-5111 or 911.
