As we continue our quest for digital literacy, we are reminded that while “all men are created equal” (Preamble to the Declaration of Independence), all of us do not have equal access to essential services. One such essential service is access to the Internet and the ability to navigate the web for distant learning, tele-medicine, employment, social services, and entertainment. What if you were able to gain access to the Internet, but could not gain access to information needed. This is a very real problem that the Native American YesWeCan Foundation is solving through its Internet Library and Digital Learning Center where all men, women and children have equal access to essential information services. What if you did not have Internet service or you did not have Internet service for one day or even one hour? It would be a crisis for many of us. We have grown up with Internet service being an essential part of our lives, both personally and professionally. We take for granted that we will be connected to high-speed Internet service to satisfy our need for instant gratification. This is not the case for many people residing on Tribal lands, who suffer from many hardships that are unimaginable for most Americans. There is an old Native American saying “Walk a Mile in My Shoes,” which means you can’t understand another person’s experience until you’ve walked in their shoes. While you may not be able to walk in the shoes of Native Americans living in severe hardship conditions, you can become familiar with their history and current situation, and you can help the Native American YesWeCan Foundation provide essential tools, such as digital literacy training, necessary for Native Americans to break the cycle of poverty and despair. Visit us at www.nativeyeswecan.com to learn more about this important cause.

The Facts Speak For Themselves: Tribal Lands Suffer From Lack of Internet Access

As of 2023, approximately 92 percent of individuals in the United States accessed the internet, up from nearly 75 percent in 2012, but just 67% of tribal lands in the continental U.S. have access to broadband internet, with the majority only having access to broadband speeds considered by the FCC to be less than 'minimally acceptable. Wow! We just returned from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and can attest, first-hand, of the lack of Internet access, even on major roadways and communities. Our Foundation is doing its part to help with the digital divide. You can help to by making a donation at

July 4th is an important celebration of America’s birthday, but let’s also recognize the sacrifice Native Americans have made over the years. Native American YesWeCan Foundation is in the midst of its 2023 Fundraising Drive to provide much needed services for residents of the Pine Ridge Indian reservation, which is one of the most impoverished areas of the country and equivalent to the poorest third world countries.

I dare you to go to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and witness first-hand the devastating effect of our historical mistreatment of Native Americans and unkept promises. The truth, however, is far more painful. 53.75% of the population live in poverty (USA average is 15.6%). Per capita income is $7,773 (USA average is $27,599). School drop-out rate is more than 70%. Tuberculosis rate is 800% higher than national average. Infant mortality rate is 300% more than national average. Teen su***de rate is 150% more than national average. Maybe you should have taken the dare, right? Here is another option: Make a donation to Native American YesWeCan Foundation who is working to change the status quo by providing social services and digital literacy tools to enable residents of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation to achieve the American dream. On June 1, 2023, Native American YesWeCan Foundation (www.nativeyeswecan.com) opened the Digital Literacy Learning Center on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, providing digital literacy training for Tribal residents. There are no charges for taking on-line classes, which include GED training and office skills, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. One of the unique and innovative approaches is to provide access to subject matter experts through a video conference link that enables students to ask questions and discuss the educational material. According to Joe RedCloud, manager of the Digital Literacy Learning Center, “the educational services offered by the Digital Literacy Learning Center is a game-changer on the reservation because adult and minor residents will now have access to free educational services that will enable them to pursue their personal and business goals.”
