How can community assets create new opportunities for the people they serve?

That question brought faith-based organizations, developers, and community development leaders together at Miami’s Develop to Serve Summit, hosted by the Office of Mayor Eileen Higgins.

At the invitation of Marta Viciedo, Senior Advisor to the Mayor and Director of Strategic Initiatives, Policy & Economic Growth, RDF joined conversations exploring how existing community spaces can support affordable housing, childcare, and other community needs.

RDF’s Brenda Loya participated in two panels, sharing development insights and how CDFIs and mission-based lenders can help turn community-centered ideas into projects that serve local needs.

500 women served each year. More than 120 businesses launched. And a permanent home where that impact can keep growing.

“At the UnidosUS conference, I approached someone from RDF and told them our story. I laid it all out: ‘This is who we are, this is what’s happening. I need to buy a building—and I have no money.’ To my surprise, they didn’t hesitate. They said, ‘This is exactly why we exist. To support organizations like yours.’"

That conversation led to RDF financing that helped Enterprising Latinas purchase a permanent home in Wimauma—creating a community hub where women can access resources, build businesses, and pursue greater economic opportunity.

It started with a conversation. But what mattered was seeing the opportunity behind it—and investing in what Enterprising Latinas was already building.

What does a thriving community need?

At the recent UnidosUS conference, RDF invited attendees to choose three priorities that matter most to them and connect them back to COMMUNITY.

Affordable housing. Small business. Education. Health care. Homeownership. Arts and culture. Food access. Entrepreneurship. And so much more.

Each string represented a priority. Together, they revealed something bigger: what shapes thriving communities doesn’t exist in isolation. It all intersects, overlaps, and strengthens one another.

When we see the connections, we see the bigger picture.

Three years ago, the dream of homeownership began. This week, she received the keys. 🔑 🏡

For Garfield’s newest homeowner, this moment represents three years of dreaming, researching, preparing and working toward a place to call her own.

And as Brenda Lopez, President & CEO of Trellis, shares in the video, getting here took partnership.

RDF is proud to have worked alongside Trellis, the City of Phoenix, the Arizona Community Foundation, and state leadership under Governor Katie Hobbs to help make homeownership opportunities like this possible.

This closing marks the first home sale in Trellis’ Garfield development and the final use of AIH funds reserved for these newly constructed homes—an important milestone for the development and the partners who helped bring it to life.

But the most meaningful milestone belongs to the new homeowner herself.

As she shares in her own words, becoming a homeowner isn’t easy. After a three-year journey, she can finally say:

Hundreds of students have greater access to education today because Guadalupe Centers had a vision for growth.

With the right financing and strong community leadership, that vision expanded into one of Missouri's largest charter school systems.
