Friends of the Children - Phoenix

Friends of the Children - Phoenix Friends of the Children is a national network of chapters with 30 years of experience working with youth. We stay with them through graduation. 12+ years.

We impact generational change by providing children facing the greatest obstacles with a long-term, salaried, professional mentor, who who we call a “Friend,” from age 4 through high school graduation – 12+ years, no matter what. Friends – Phoenix was founded in 2022 to work specifically with children in the Phoenix area. We hire and train paid, professional mentors—called “Friends”—to help childr

en build the skills, goals, and relationships they need to succeed in life. We will provide a child in kindergarten or 1st grade with a trained, Professional Mentor—called a “Friend”—to help them develop academic, social, and life skills. No matter what. A Friend will help each child set goals and create an individualized road map for achieving their dreams. The child and their Friend will spend up to four hours per week together building a relationship and making progress toward their goals. Activities will occur in the community, at our clubhouse, or in their school. Additionally, our evidence-based two-generation (2Gen) approach positively impacts the entire family system, empowering caregivers to address their own needs and trauma while also learning to promote their child’s learning and healthy social, emotional, and physical development. Friends support caregivers in improving their parenting skills by helping them understand their child’s needs and strengths through Core Asset development. Friends empower caregiver voice through self-advocacy as they support them to navigate complex systems.

🚗✨ Car wash day = quality time + a little extra help!

A few of the girls Gaby mentors are always asking to go through the car wash, but this time they took it a step further—they wanted to dry it off and clean the outside afterward, too. Gaby said, who was I to say no?! Now her car has never been cleaner!

Sometimes the best moments happen during the simplest outings. Whether it's washing a car, sharing laughs, or working together as a team, these everyday experiences help build confidence, responsibility, and memories that can be counted on to bring a smile.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make end-of-year celebrations so special for Phoenix youth. From assembling incredible balloon arches and transforming gymnasium walls into spaces worthy of celebration, to preparing thoughtful certificates and words of encouragement, every detail helped ensure that each student feel seen, celebrated, and proud of all they accomplished this year.

These moments don't happen by accident. They happen because of a community that believes our young people deserve to be recognized for their hard work, growth, and perseverance.

Thank you to everyone who lent their time, creativity, and energy to make these celebrations unforgettable. Here's to a successful school year and an exciting summer ahead! 💙🎓🎈

What does belonging look like?

At Friends of the Children – Phoenix, it looks like colorful “About Me” posters covering our Clubhouse walls, connection cards tucked into mailboxes, shared laughter over common interests, and young people discovering they are truly seen and valued.

What started as a simple creative project has quickly become something much bigger, building confidence, strengthening relationships, and creating deeper community among our youth, mentors, and staff.

Belonging doesn’t happen by accident. It’s something we intentionally build every single day. 💙

Happy National Smile Day! 😄 If there’s one thing we know, it’s that ice cream, smoothies, and a little time spent together with a cool treat on a hot day are a recipe for big smiles and even bigger silly faces.

Today, we're celebrating all the smiles that make our days brighter. 💙🍦🥤

Another school year officially in the books 🎉

From classroom victories to big milestones, we’re so proud of all the hard work our youth put in this year — and we're even more grateful that they never had to celebrate alone.

At Friends of the Children – Phoenix, every youth is paired with a professional mentor who shows up year after year for moments big and small, including the last day of school celebrations 💙

This summer has just gotten started, but one of our youth is already signed up for the “Dig Into Reading” summer reading program and is setting goals for a season full of stories, imagination, and learning. To help stay motivated, his Friend took him to pick out a reading timer to track his daily reading minutes and celebrate his progress along the way!

At Friends of the Children – Phoenix, we know small tools and big encouragement can make a lasting difference. Summer reading helps build confidence, strengthens literacy skills, and opens doors to new adventures—one page at a time. 💛

Way to go, reader! We can’t wait to see all the books you dig into this summer. 🌞📖

A huge thank you to WINI Phoenix for creating such a joyful and meaningful birthday celebration at the Clubhouse for our youth and team! 🎉💛

From start to finish, the day was filled with laughter, connection, and generosity. WINI Phoenix brought so much energy and care into every activity, including:

⚽ Competitive games of keepy-uppy that had everyone smiling and cheering each other on
📚 Time spent in our library coding books to help make our collection more accessible for youth and Friends alike

In addition to the celebration, WINI Phoenix also organized a sports equipment drive to help ensure our active youth always have something fun to do, indoors and out! 🏀🏈⚾

Partnerships like this help create spaces where young people feel celebrated, supported, and encouraged to explore their interests and strengths.

Thank you, WINI Phoenix, for sharing your time, heart, and community spirit with Friends of the Children – Phoenix. We’re grateful for your partnership and the lasting impact you’ve made! ✨

When Professional Mentor Gaby asked Solomon, a 4th grader enrolled in our Friends - Phoenix program, if he was nervous to give his speech at our 2026 FRIENDraiser, he replied, “No, I’m good!”

His confidence was clear as he worked to remember the words he had written to share. If you weren't in the room, or you want to relive the speech that was the highlight of the night, take just a minute and watch Solomon share his story!
