Today, we pause to honor Juneteenth — a day that marks the end of chattel slavery in the United States and reminds us that freedom delayed is not freedom delivered.

At the Arizona Health Equity Conference, we believe that understanding history is inseparable from advancing health equity. The legacy of slavery, segregation, and systemic racism didn't end in 1865 — it shaped the policies, institutions, and systems that continue to drive health disparities in Black communities today. From maternal mortality rates to chronic disease burden to access to care, the data tells a story rooted in history that we cannot ignore.

Juneteenth is both a celebration and a call to action. We honor it by recommitting to the work — building systems that are just, equitable, and designed to allow every community to thrive.

The 13th Annual Arizona Health Equity Conference is coming up October 22, 2026 in Phoenix. We hope you'll join us in continuing this conversation.

Our Quarterly Lunch & Learn series is back by popular demand!

Join us on July 24th for Mapping What Matters: Why Community Health Assessments Need All of Us, featuring Lily Cardenas with Maricopa County Department of Public Health, a nationally recognized public health and equity leader with more than two decades of experience advancing health equity across Arizona and beyond.

In this one-hour session, we'll explore how Community Health Needs Assessment data is collected, who can access it, and how it's being used to drive meaningful change statewide — including lessons learned, emerging dashboards, and opportunities for collaboration.

This session is free and open to public health professionals, researchers, students, CBOs, and state and county partners. It's also a great foundation for anyone planning to join us at the Arizona Health Equity Conference this October.
