BERNIE’S VET UPDATE — WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Today’s vet visit was a banger! We expected the bill to be high, but there’s always that little part of us secretly hoping it won’t be.

Our newest intake, Bernie, the African Grey, is unfortunately not in the best of health. We don’t know his exact age, but his examination revealed age-related changes to his eyes, suggesting he’s an older gentleman.

Bernie is underweight, has significant chronic feather plucking, and has been struggling with his appetite. Thankfully, his f***l test came back normal! He received assisted feeding today, and we’re now waiting on his bloodwork to give us a better picture of his overall health.

Our goal is to improve Bernie’s nutrition, rebuild his strength, and give him the care, enrichment, and love he deserves.

Today’s veterinary bill came to $663.65, and we’re asking our wonderful bird community to come together once again to help us cover his medical expenses. Every donation, no matter how small, makes a difference.

But we’re asking for something else, too. ❤️

Please lift Bernie’s mom up in prayer. She remains hospitalized in serious condition, and our greatest hope is that she overcomes her health challenges so she and Bernie can be reunited and continue sharing their lives together.

We’re not looking for Bernie to find a new home. We’re hoping to help him get healthy enough to return to the home and person he knows.

Who Will Care for Your Birds in an Emergency?

If you live alone, are elderly, or don’t have family nearby, have you made arrangements for your birds if you’re suddenly hospitalized or unable to return home?

Unfortunately, birds can be left alone for days before anyone realizes they’re there.

**Please make an emergency plan!**

>Place a clearly visible note on your refrigerator with:

* Your birds’ names and species.
* Feeding instructions and where supplies are kept.
* Your avian veterinarian’s name and phone number.
* Any medications or special needs.
* Contact information for a trusted caregiver and backup person.
* Important handling instructions.

>Keep a card in your wallet stating, “I have birds at home that need immediate care,” with an emergency contact number.

>Most importantly, make sure someone knows your birds are there and has a way to access your home.

>Your birds depend on you for everything. Make sure they’re protected even when you can’t be there.

An Update on Bernie, Our Newly Arrived African Grey ❤️

Here are a couple of photos of Bernie, the African Grey we picked up today.

As you can see, Bernie has significant feather loss on his chest. At this point, we don’t know whether he has been plucking for some time or if this is something that recently started.

Bernie had been left in his cage since Sunday. When Kim arrived, she was able to reach in and gently pick him up. Bernie was lethargic, which is concerning.

We still don’t know much about his history, but judging by the contents of his cage, it appears Bernie has not been receiving a nutritionally balanced diet.

This makes a veterinary examination and blood work especially important. We need to evaluate his overall health and check for possible underlying conditions, including liver disease, gout, and nutritional deficiencies. His feather loss could also have a medical cause, so we don’t want to assume it’s behavioral plucking.

As for Bernie’s mom, all we know right now is that she remains in critical condition. We can only imagine how difficult this situation is, and our hearts go out to her.

I’m sure in the coming days we’ll learn more about both Bernie and his mom. In the meantime, our priority is making sure Bernie receives the care, proper nutrition, and medical attention he needs.

Please keep Bernie and especially his mom in your thoughts and prayers. Our greatest hope is that they will both recover and be reunited in good health. ❤️

Ok folks,

We’re on our way to pick up an African Grey whose mom is currently in the hospital. We don’t know the extent of her condition yet, but we do know it’s serious, and unfortunately, we’re not sure if she will make it.

For now, her Grey will be safe with us and cared for while we wait for news about his owner.

That said, the Grey needs to be vetted as soon as possible. All of the donations we previously received went toward Eli’s care, so we’re asking for your help once again to cover this unexpected intake and his veterinary expenses.

We know we ask a lot of our little community, and as always, we are incredibly grateful to all of you for caring so deeply about the birds in our care. Every donation, no matter the amount, helps us say yes when a bird suddenly needs us—just like this Grey does today.

Please keep his mom in your thoughts as well. We’re hoping very much that she recovers and that this is only a temporary stay with us. ❤️

Someone recently reached out to us looking for another bird after losing their elderly, very sick parrot. But after seeing that ci******es were being smoked inside the home around the bird, we need to address this.

By her own description, this bird suffered terribly. He was very sick, couldn’t fly, struggled extensively, screamed until he fainted, and needed the bottom of his cage padded so he wouldn’t injure himself when he fell. This bird suffered through a long, difficult decline before he died.

And yet he was also being exposed to cigarette smoke inside his home.

Smoking in a home with a parrot is dangerous.

Birds have incredibly sensitive respiratory systems. What may seem like “just a little smoke” to us can be extremely harmful to them.

If you smoke, that is your choice. But your bird does not have a choice about the air it breathes.

Smoking should NEVER take place inside a home where birds live. Not in another room. Not by an open window. Not because the bird is across the house.

Take it outside.

If you’re considering bringing another bird into your family, providing clean, smoke-free air is not optional. It is part of responsible bird ownership.

We cannot say what ultimately caused this particular bird’s death. But we can say this: a bird who is already sick and struggling should never have to breathe cigarette smoke on top of everything else they’re enduring.

Please protect their tiny lungs.

Smoke outside. Your bird is depending on you.
