Why We Choose Parrots
By Oneta Carter – The Parrot Guru
Most people will never understand why we choose parrots.
They see the noise.
We hear the conversations.
They see the mess.
We see a life being lived.
They see a bird in a cage.
We see a member of our family.
Parrot people are different. We willingly open our homes and hearts to some of the most intelligent, emotional, demanding creatures on the planet. We accept shredded furniture, chewed woodwork, feathers floating through the air, and food scattered across the floor because we understand something others often do not.
The value of a parrot is not measured in convenience.
It is measured in connection.
A parrot is one of the few animals capable of choosing you every single day.
They don’t stay because you own them.
They stay because they trust you.
That trust is earned through thousands of tiny moments. Through every meal prepared, every cage cleaned, every late-night worry when they aren’t feeling well, every toy rotated, every bath offered, every whispered “good morning” and “good night.”
Parrots challenge us to become better caretakers, better observers, and often better people.
They force us to slow down.
To pay attention.
To listen.
To be present.
They celebrate with us when life is good. They comfort us when life is hard. Many parrot owners will tell you that during some of the darkest moments of their lives, it was the gentle eyes of a feathered companion that reminded them to keep going.
A parrot doesn’t care what kind of car you drive.
They don’t care how much money you make.
They don’t care about your title or your social status.
They care whether you showed up.
They care whether you kept your promises.
They care whether they can count on you.
In a world where loyalty often feels temporary, parrots offer something extraordinary. They offer a bond built on consistency, trust, and mutual respect.
For decades, they stand beside us.
They witness our marriages.
They watch our children grow.
They celebrate birthdays and holidays.
They survive moves, career changes, heartbreaks, and triumphs.
They become woven into the very fabric of our lives.
And one day, you realize something remarkable.
You never really rescued them.
They rescued you.
Their laughter filled empty rooms.
Their routines gave structure to difficult days.
Their affection healed wounds no one else could see.
Their presence made a house feel like home.
Parrots are not for everyone.
They were never meant to be.
But for those of us fortunate enough to share our lives with them, we understand a truth that is difficult to explain to the outside world.
Life is richer with feathers on the floor.
Life is brighter with a flock in the house.
Life is better when a parrot loves you.
And that is why we choose parrots.
Every single time.
