400TH ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATION OF AFRICANS BROUGHT TO
NORTH AMERICA ENSLAVED IN AUGUST 1619
Theme: “400 YEARS FORWARD: 1619-2019—Beyond Enslavement”
First Institutional Baptist Church, August 20, 2019
Dr. Warren H. Stewart, Sr., Co-Convener
CALLTO ACTION
“400 YEARS FORWARD: 1619-2019—Beyond Enslavement”
We have come together as Africans, African-Americans and others to remember,
reflect, respond and recover from the inhumane systemic racism that spanned
Africa to North America.
We are “Bridging the African Diaspora”, moving into the fifth century with
determination and deliverance.
We reaffirm our History and Heritage in hope with hope in spite of four centuries
of hate and harassment.
Therefore, we are CALLED TO ACTION as brothers and sisters of the African
Diaspora to remain connected in community, never to be disconnected again by
the consequences of irrational racism.
Therefore, we are CALLED TO ACTION historically, culturally, spiritually,
educationally, politically, responsively and collectively to MOVE FORWARD
BEYOND any and every kind of enslavement that attempt to captivate our Godgiven identity and purpose.
Therefore, we are CALLED TO ACTION to honor our ancestors and foreparents on
both sides of the Middle Passage who built this nation and other nations with
ingenuity, strength, wisdom and perseverance by learning from our past,
stabilizing our present and securing our future.
Therefore, we are CALLED TO ACTION to save the children by teaching them who
they really are in order that they might name, define and create for themselves
and their children a community and world that are just, equitable, productive,
faithful, loving and color-inclusive.
“God of our weary years. God of our silent tears. Thou who has brought us thus
far on the way. Thou who has by Thy might led us into the light, keep us forever
in the path, we pray.”
Musifuni Bwana! Yami kani Mulungu! Mayibongwe nKosi! Praise the Lord!

AFRICAN PRAYER FOR PEACE

O God our Creator, the Creator of our ancestors and of all living things!
You are higher than our revered mountains,
Longer than our River Nile,
Larger than the entire expanse of our land,
Richer than our chiefs and kings,
Far more powerful and beyond compare to our venerated ancestors.

We lie prostrate before you, facing the west where the sun goes to sleep,
Begging you for peace in our beloved motherland Africa, painted red with the blood of Her Children who have been recklessly killed by those who should have protected them,
Those you have given the power to lead them!
As the sun sets, let it carry with it all the Evil that exist among us.

O God our Creator, the Creator of our ancestors and of all living things!
Give us courage and fortitude to challenge Evil that may come in many guises
To tarnish the beauty of our Motherland Africa.
Help us to devote our whole life: our thoughts and actions
To peace-building among the different ethnicities in Africa.

O God our Creator, the Creator of our ancestors and of all living things!
You created our different ethnicities out of love and as reflections of your beauty
But we have turned it into sources of conflict, hatred and war.
We beg you, in your merciful kindness, to destroy and heal all causes of wars that bedevil Africa, Leading to vicious cycles of poverty and suffering for our people, your beloved children
Eliminate from our midst, we beseech you, all causes of violence
And wipe away tears from Africa that is wrapped in sorrow and mourning!

O God our Creator, the Creator of our ancestors and of all living things!
We pray for a new Africa where there will be no orphans and widows due to wars,
Where fear, violence and hatred shall be no more,
Where the greed of the powerful that perpetuates poverty
Will give way to sharing the bounty of the land,
Where our selfishness will not blind us to see the injustices around us,
Where all will experience the joy of belonging to the Motherland Africa.
O God our Creator, the Creator of our ancestors and of all living things,
We end our prayer by asking that you grant African peoples and the whole human race,
The joy of belonging to your kingdom of justice, peace and love.
May peace prevail in Africa!
May peace prevail on earth!
In Jesus’ holy name we pray -Amen. Extracted from: “Fr. Robert’s Prayers of Hope and Peace” booklet.
