He holds the distinction of being the only Pensacola Police non-employee to be suspended from police duties.
If he was hired to commemorate your birthday, you never forgot it.
He was the balloon man in the small, glorious village that was Cordova Mall in the 80’s.
If you were ever involved in your neighborhood watch, he was there too, decked out in his one-of-a-kind Neighborhood Watch uniform supplied by the PPD.
If you were a cop working the long, hot Fourth of July events downtown, he brought you food and a cold drink.
If you were ever in need of a lesson in empathy, Ivan seemed to show up.
Some say that it was in the mid-1960’s when Ivan made his presence known to the PPD. As a teenager, he would pull cars over on his bicycle and issue them “citations” for whatever offense they may have committed. The Pensacola Police officers in his neighborhood dissuaded him from this activity for a whole host of reasons, but primarily because they recognized an innocent soul that just wanted to belong.
And that is how Ivan Levine became a fixture in the Pensacola Police Department. Three generations of officers looked out for Ivan, included him when they could, and treated him like a kid brother.
One night, I was sitting alone at Waffle House working on a domestic violence report. It was a bad one, and I was having trouble with my faith in the human race. Ivan came in and sat down across from me. To be honest, I really didn’t want any company. He started peppering me with questions, and I gave short answers, hoping he would let me document this goat rope and get on with my night. Ivan didn’t take the hint, which was one of his attributes, and got me talking. After a few minutes, he said, “They were lucky it was you.” Ivan went on to explain why, and that has stuck with me some thirty years later.
So, Ivan, thank you for being a friend, for being a distraction, and for offering a young cop some perspective.
He will be missed by the entire Pensacola Police Department family, his Seville Quarter family, and thousands of people he made laugh over the years.
Ivan’s Celebration of Life will be held at Seville Quarter on Monday, October 26, at 3 pm. This may be the closest Pensacola has ever had to a State Funeral.
