Meet Habitat SLO’s Vice Chair, Shawn Mulqueeney! When he’s not volunteering on the Habitat board he can be found at SESLOC Credit Union as their Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer!

What inspired you to join the Habitat for Humanity board? I was involved with Habitat for Humanity while living in Washington (builds, events, etc.). Habitat has always aligned with my and credit union values of homeownership. It is one of the driving factors to a strong community. When I had the chance to get involved with Habitat here in SLO County, I jumped at the opportunity.

What do you do outside of serving on the Habitat for Humanity board? Being a part of SESLOC, I have an opportunity to attend events for various non-profits in SLO County throughout the year. I am amazed at how much great work is going on in our communities by some extraordinary individuals. Because those individuals aren’t looking for personal accolades, many folks in our communities aren’t aware of these great organizations.

If you have a favorite Habitat memory, what is it?: One of my first events with Habitat was a build day outside of Seattle. Aside from learning new construction skills (siding in not easy), working alongside the future homeowners was the treat of the day.bThe appreciation for Habitat and those working on the build site was infectious.

What’s your favorite thing about San Luis Obispo County? Hands down, it’s the ability to be outside as much as we want. Whether that’s for exercise, outdoor concerts or any number of festivals in the area. Being able to enjoy the sunshine leads to a happy community. And that happy community tends to have more engaged community neighbors. It’s all about the connections we make with strangers.
