ENCOURAGEMENT

Into the light

Directors,

Nate Nash at Living Faith Church in Watford City, North Dakota, wrote us after looking at a number of ministries before landing with FTL. One line from his note stayed with me: “I really appreciate how this is truly a discipleship ministry.”


“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.”

1 JOHN 1:7
That word is the whole thing for us. When a man walks into your group, we are not asking him to manage his sin quietly on his own. We are asking him to bring it into the light, in front of people who are not going to leave.

Notice what John says happens there. We have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin. The man who finally tells the truth in your room finds out two things on the same night. He has brothers, and he is forgiven.

That is what you are offering every week, whether the room is full or there are three of you. Hang onto that. And pray with me for the directors at the ACBC conference this week, that they come home with more to give.

ENCOURAGEMENT

He will finish it

Directors,

David Salch at Chayim Ministries in Lott, Texas, sent me a note bragging on one of his volunteers. She went through the program herself. Now she leads her own group, and she has brought fresh energy to their outreach. David said FTL didn’t just help the men in his group, “it multiplied into her calling too.”


“And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”

PHILIPPIANS 1:6
Paul wrote that verse from a prison cell to a church he could not get to. He was not confident in the Philippians because they had it all together. He was confident because of who started the work in them.

Hang onto that when you look around your room this week. The man who is barely holding on is not a finished story. God started something in him, and God does not leave his work half done. Some of the people you are discipling right now will be leading groups of their own one day. You will not always get to see it. David did, and I wanted you to hear about it.

So keep showing up and keep planting. Finishing the work is his job.

The phone rang for you

Directors,

Abigail B. at Three Waters Ministries wrote in this week. One of the men in her group was in the middle of an overdose crisis with his son, and the people he called first were the three who had been meeting with him faithfully for months. Before anyone else. Before his own family.

That is what a small group builds when nobody is watching. Not a program. A phone number a man reaches for on the worst night of his life.


“And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.”
ACTS 2:42

Notice the order in that verse. Devoted first, then everything else. The teaching and the prayers and the breaking of bread were not filler between the important parts. They were the important parts, repeated long enough that trust had somewhere to grow.

Most of what you do looks like nothing much on a Thursday. Setting out chairs. Asking the same man how his week went. Showing up when four people come instead of forty. Then one night the phone rings, and it rings for you, because you were the one who kept showing up.

Keep at it. You are building something that will hold when it has to.
