Heidi’s House community center in Chicago is a wonderful place for service-learning opportunities. Groups gather to learn about refugees’ experiences, then deliver household essentials to resettled families in the Rogers Park neighborhood. The families receive help and encouragement. Volunteers have a chance to make a personal connection with refugee neighbors.

A basket of groceries can also deliver hope. Many refugee families are no longer receiving nutrition assistance through SNAP. Volunteers like Peighton are delivering Grocery Care Packs to resettled families who are facing food insecurity. “Thank you. You show us that we are not alone,” said Imani, who fled Congo. Teachers agree: the summer slide is real. Without practice, kids lose academic skills during the long break. Yet, with the support of volunteers like Steven, Zaid, a Rohingya refugee, kept reading all summer. No slide for him!

How great to see neighbors become friends! Over 250 resettled refugees filled an Open House at Heidi’s House Chicago. Through crafts, face painting, and great conversations, refugee families met volunteers, learned about Heidi's House programs, and took home a small Care Pack. Summer Club at Heidi’s House Wheaton is more than fun. It’s a place where resettled refugee kids in DuPage County keep learning over the school break. What a great way to spend Family Serve Day! Members from the Bridge churches collected Care Packs for resettled refugees in Chicago. After learning about refugees’ experiences, they headed out in teams to personally deliver the packs and to meet the families. Thank you for caring for refugees, Bridge Community Church!

Sometimes a powerful connection begins with a simple conversation. Pat met Khin, a resettled refugee from Burma, through a weekly English practice group. When Khin was no longer able to attend, Pat didn't let the relationship end there. She visited her at home weekly. What began as language practice has blossomed into a sweet friendship.
