Ahmed was a doctor in his home country of Afghanistan. Yet when his family was threatened by the Taliban, he knew they had to escape. The years of rebuilding in Chicago have been difficult. Yet, like so many refugee fathers, Ahmed is building a brighter future for his kids. This weekend we honor refugee dads and the volunteers who support them.

World Refugee Day is a chance to recognize the courage and resilience of our refugee neighbors. These moments from last year’s celebration remind us why it’s such a joy-filled tradition! This Saturday, Exodus staff and volunteers will once again be cheering on Exodus United in the World Refugee Day Soccer Tournament. Join us at Chicago’s Foster Street Beach from 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. for cultural performances, delicious food, and more. We’d love to see you at the Exodus tent!

The violence of war in Uganda forced Richard and Gloria to flee in search of safety and stability. Their experience of being forcibly displaced marked the first part of their journey. When they were resettled in Chicago and began to rebuild their lives, another journey began. Maria, a 15-year-old refugee from Venezuela, raced to the Heidi’s House teens group to learn about making mosaics. Local artist and volunteer Candice helped the teens use broken and discarded glass to create beauty. They took home a beautiful reminder of hope.
