A Grocery Care Pack can help fill empty shelves, but it can also fill a home with hope. Volunteers from First Presbyterian Church in Wheaton delivered needed groceries to the Faizi family, refugees from Afghanistan. The Faizis expressed appreciation not only for the support, but for the kindness behind it: “Thank you for thinking about us!”

The Exodus team had the privilege of leading a workshop at City of Welcome, an immigration justice event sponsored by the Coalition for Spiritual and Public Leadership. Chicagoland parishioners learned about refugees and the many challenges they face. What a joy to build connections with Christian communities taking meaningful steps toward advocacy, service, and friendship with resettled refugees.

It was a powerful evening with authors Abdulhaq Sodais, an Afghan interpreter, and Spencer Sullivan, a U.S. Army veteran. Exodus’ Director of Education, Jody May, led a discussion on the themes of their book, “Not Our Problem,”– a memoir about war, friendship, and the realities of the global refugee crisis. We’re grateful to Holy Family Catholic Community for giving their community this chance to learn about refugees.

New Neighbors for Youth help resettled refugee kids close learning gaps and build academic skills for a brighter future. Sometimes, though, the perfect lesson is to take a break and enjoy a beautiful day together.

Courage and Connection: Stories of Refugee Neighbors is a gallery of compelling portraits. It highlights resettled refugees in Chicago and the volunteers who have walked beside them. Thank you to Immanuel Community Church, St. James Parish Arlington Heights, Little Home Church by the Wayside - UCC, and Holy Trinity Church Downtown for hosting the gallery in the coming weeks. You are helping your communities gain a deeper understanding of refugee neighbors.

Language practice with delicious perks! When Anna volunteered to help Roya, a resettled refugee, practice English, she didn’t know about extravagant Afghan hospitality. Roya is growing in skills and Anna is getting a taste of a new culture. That’s a win-win!
