The best bang trim I've ever had came with a garbage bag cape. ✂️

Last Thursday we were invited to present our housing at the Seattle corrections office, where men and women just coming home were connecting with services to start their next chapter. Housing, jobs, IDs, support — everything a person needs to rebuild.

And haircuts.

Meet Mike. Well — meet Mike's arms. Our photographer for the day was my little one, who stands four feet tall and shoots from the angle she's got. Mike's head didn't make it into a single frame. His scissors did, and that's what matters.

Mike regularly gives free haircuts at the mission, and Thursday he set up his chair at the resource fair. I sat down, he draped a garbage bag over my shoulders like it was the finest salon cape in Seattle, and he gave me the most amazing bang trim of my life.

Then he offered to come to our homes and cut hair for our residents.

That's what this work looks like. People showing up with what they have — a pair of clippers, a garbage bag, a gift — and giving it freely. A fresh haircut isn't a small thing when you're starting over. It's dignity you can see in the mirror.

We measured what happens inside our recovery homes — and the numbers tell the story.

Sherri Candelario, Ph.D., co-founder ot Kate's House with her husband Frank, studied 154 residents across 7 homes we own using the REC-CAP assessment at intake, 45, and 90 days. Residents who engaged 30+ days stayed an average of 181 days. 94% reported strong connection and meaningful daily activity. And 1 in 3 residents who arrived unemployed found work.

This year we opened our 8th recovery home. Frank and Sherri created a new model of recovery housing 10 years ago. Now, we have the data that MAT and compassion work together to save lives. Our co-founder, Sherri Candelario, Ph.D., published a two-year study showing how the Kate's House model of recovery housing succeeds. And we're now helping people across the U.S. open their own recovery homes for veterans, adults who aged out of foster care, and people in recovery.

This Memorial Day, we're deeply honored to share something deeply personal: Frank's music video "The Green Hills of Normandy," filmed during our journey to this sacred ground where so many brave souls made the ultimate sacrifice. 🎖️

We've had the privilege of housing countless veterans at Kate's House Foundation—men and women who've served our country and now deserve a safe place to heal and rebuild. They come home carrying wounds both seen and unseen, and we believe every single one deserves a welcoming home, steady support, and a community that never gives up on them.

Kate’s House Director of Housing Operations, Yenni was making a repair at our Yellow House. A new resident was wearing sweats - the same clothes he had been released in days earlier. Yenni called a former resident, Sheila, who works at South Seattle College.

Sheila provided new clothing for our newest residents in their sizes. This is the power of empathy, lived experience and first hand knowledge of our values. The greatest gift is restoring dignity.

Our team came from our program and now do big things for those who follow. We witness love and compassion every day.
