VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Saturdays, between June 27th and July 28th

We are seeking volunteers to help re-thatch our small hale at Maui Nui Botanical Gardens!

For several Saturdays between June 27 and July 28, there will be a great learning opportunity under Maui hale builder Iwikauikaua Joaquin, one of the original builders in 2018. Utilizing loulu from the MNBG trees, Iwikau will lead the group in building a scaffold, tying the loulu leaves, and rethatching, finishing with the cap. If you can tie your shoes, you are qualified to kōkua! (Minors are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.)

Shifts are both mornings and afternoons; sign up for a whole day or a partial day.
Instruction, drinks, snacks, tools, and gloves will be provided.

Kalani Pai‘ea Wohi o Kaleikini Keali‘ikui Kamehameha o ‘Iolani i Kaiwikapu Kau‘i ka Liholiho Kūnuiākea was born in ‘Āinakea, Kohala, on Hawai‘i Island.

His mother was Keku‘iapoiwa II. His father was Keōua Kalanikupuapa‘ikalaninui however, Kamakau’s writings mention that Kahekilinui‘ahumanu, Chief of Maui, was his biological father.

Pai‘ea was born in the month of Ikuwā, around November, and he had his birth ceremony at the Mo‘okini Heiau. The year he was born is not certain. He died on May 8, 1819 and was said to have been about 80 years old.

In 1871, Kamehameha V, Lota Kapuāiwa, Kamehameha’s grandson, proclaimed June 11 as a public holiday to honor him.
