Pā‘ū o hi‘iaka

Hawaiian name: Pā‘ū o hi‘iaka
Botanical name: Jacquemontia sandwicensis
Family: Convolvulaceae (Morning Glory Family)
Status: Endemic
Where found: All Hawaiian islands
Water/Light: Dry, with full to part sun exposure
Elevation range: 0 to 1,650 feet
Height: 2 inches, with an up to 5 foot spread

The English translation of pā‘ū o hi‘iaka is, skirt of hi'iaka. Hawaiian legend explains how this plant received its name; Pele (the Hawaiian goddess of fire) took Hi‘iaka, her baby sister, with her everywhere. One day, Pele went surfing and left Hi‘iaka on the beach for much longer than usual. This vine grew over Hi‘iaka to protect her from the sun’s harmful rays... In old Hawai‘i, the dried leaves and stems of this native were made into a tea or mixed with niu (coconut) and eaten. Medicinally, pā‘ū o hi‘iaka was used to treat lepo pa‘a (constipation), ‘eha maka‘u (frightening pains or aches), and to treat cuts. Pā‘ū o hi‘iaka makes a great ground cover as it is drought, wind, salt, and heat tolerant.

Wowzers!

"This pāpale pua kō (sugarcane tassel hat) belonged to Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop. It features a closed braid with a fancy edge on one side, resulting in an elaborate texture.
The hatband on this pāpale, made of dyed purple and yellow feathers, is assembled to look like a flower lei. In Hawaiʻi, feathers have long been associated with aliʻi, appearing in chiefly garments like ahu ʻula (feather capes). The use of feathers in Pauahi's hat is, perhaps, a creative ode to that chiefly connection.

Hula Is the Heartbeat brings Hālau Kekuaokalaʻauʻalaʻiliahi, Hālau Keʻalaokamaile, Hālau Kauluokalā and Hālau Nā Lei Kaumaka O Uka together for an evening of hula performances, cultural presentations, and storytelling.

The program celebrates the traditions, stories, and values carried through hula and the generations of dancers who continue to share them.

Join us Saturday, October 24, at Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea. Doors open at 5 pm, and the show begins at 6 pm in the Ballroom.

As we mark the 50th anniversary of Hōkūleʻa’s first voyage to Tahiti and back, Festivals of Aloha: Wailea presents He Waʻa Koa, featuring special guest speaker Penny Martin, one of only two women who were part of the historic voyage.

Hear from Penny as she shares perspective from a journey that helped spark a new era of Hawaiian voyaging and cultural resurgence.

He Waʻa Koa takes place Saturday, October 24, from 11 am - 12 pm in Salon A at Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea.
