Great day with NYC Parks for the tree census at MacNeil Park this past Saturday! By counting and taking data of individual trees, we’re able to track the health and conditions of our trees for their long term well being. Our Community Composting program will soon have a new home at Orkestai Farm, within the magnificent Planting Fields Arboretum in Oyster Bay. Our pilot program for community composting in Upper Brookville has been a huge success, diverting more than 1000 pounds of food scraps from the trash in just four months. We launched on March 30 with a dream and solid goals. Today, we shoveled near-finished compost into buckets and began distributing it to our dedicated participants! We prepare for our move with deep satisfaction for keeping so much material out of the landfill. It will now go back into the Earth to nourish gardens!
Huge thanks to our friends Community Composting in Sea Cliff for donating compost buckets ❤️ and for our friends in the smallish but forceful LI composting community.

Vickie is a longtime supporter of our efforts and recently renewed funding for Fiscal Year 2027, which began on July 1. We deeply appreciate that. Today, the city began removing abandoned boats from around the College Point coastline — a joyful high point in CPN’s decades-long journey to clear our coast & nearshore waters of derelict boats, washed- up dock floats, , broken pilings, concrete slabs, etc. A victory for the College Point community!!

End of the line for another of my favorite MacNeil Park trees, the Horse Chestnut.

This is one of the select trees we featured in our tree tagging project years back, when it was the lone Horse Chestnut tree in the entire park.

It’s been in rough shape for years with the main trunk rotted out, so we planted a “baby” just across the pathway in a grassy triangle, while we continued to enjoy watching the elder tree leaf out and bloom each year, and produce chestnuts!

The compound leaf structure is quite beautiful, each one with 5 to 7 leaflets. And these delicate flowers turn into spiky shelled horse chestnuts, a.k.a. conkers.

Soon we will transfer the elder tree’s tag onto this juvenile. If you want to visit, it stands on the top of the 115th St. hill within the park.

You’re invited to the launch of the “Abandoned Vessel Removal Project” at Big Rock Beach in College Point!

Join us on Wednesday, 7/29 from 1-2 pm. (The beach is at the dead end of 28th ave. and 119th st.).

At long last, derelict vessels and other large marine debris will be removed from urban waters in College Point, along with elsewhere in Queens, the Bronx, and Brooklyn, thanks to NOAA and the NYC Parks Office of Marine Debris and Vessel Surrendering. CPN is a community partner on this project along with the American Littoral Society.

Come share our excitement to watch contractors on a barge remove large debris from the waters of Big Rock, where many of you have joined our beach cleanups over the last six years!

We are thrilled to have the project launched here in CP and look forward to sharing this meaningful environmental milestone.

We gave the compass overlook at Powell‘s Cove Park a much-needed haircut! Now you can actually see the gorgeous water view. Thank you to the NYC Parks stewardship team for organizing this important event and for educating folks throughout the day about the plants we worked to manage.
