The Owensboro Black Expo was established in the 1970s by a group of individuals who wanted to fill a void. They formed Expo to counter the city's lack of social options centered on black history and culture. Expo has continued to promote and celebrate black history, arts and culture with various programs and events such as an annual Black History Month essay contest for local students; an annual E

xpo Week during the summer which includes a gospel concert, basketball tournament and scholarship pageant for teen girls, which has provided about $45,000 in scholarships over the years; an annual Careers on Wheels expo where children get an up-close look at police, firefighters, emergency responders and others who work "on wheels" in the community; and the annual "Taste" which features local chefs with a myriad of desserts and dishes, mostly of the soul food variety.
