Buenos Aires, October 30, 1992, a stadium show for about 50,000.

Calamity Jane — four women from Portland — opened, and the crowd threw dirt clods and spit until they left the stage mid-set.

Nirvana came out and refused to give the audience what it came for: they played a sloppy, wandering set, teased the opening riff of their biggest song over and over and never played it, and let long stretches dissolve into noise.

Cobain said afterward they'd been terrible on purpose.

The show was one night, but Cobain’s point resonates today.

Two months after that show, he put it in the liner notes of Incesticide: anyone who hated gay people, people of color, or women should do the band a favor and stay away from their shows and stop buying their records.

He had exactly one album's worth of leverage, and he spent it telling part of his audience it could leave.

Ed Sheeran is worth over $400 million.

When pressure mounted to get rid of his opening act Macklemore for saying "free Palestine,” he caved.

Sheeran said that Macklemore asked to come along. Which is true.

So did Calamity Jane.

The difference is Sheeran has more leverage than Nirvana ever did.
The difference is what each man decided what to do with it.
