Hello, Everyone!

This is from Kloey Points, and Sydney Kammerud, seniors at OHS, who are in the midst of finishing our Why Wait project, Safe Letters. Our project is geared toward providing students with the tools and support to face mental health issues. We have initiated a variety of projects in each school in our district, providing tools, resources, and support for all different ages. We are very excited to be ALMOST finished with our project and would be super appreciative if you would be willing to contribute to our project through this Amazon Wishlist. https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1WJNDISR3CGKS?ref_=wl_share
These supplies will be used to create tools and kits for each grade level in the intermediate school as well as a Safe Letters box in the middle school. Thank you in advance for your support!

This project takes us to one of America's most beautiful places, but one that has been undergoing a tough struggle, Hawaii. Due to the devastating fires that this state endured earlier this year, and also in honor of her Hawaiian heritage, Lizzie's project, Ho'omau Healing Hawaii, was born. Ho'omau's mission is to provide a feeling of relief to the Lahania fire victims. She is creating different boxes that will apply to all different groups to help provide items they might need for hygiene, stress relief, and more. To fundraise for this she is making and selling her own scented candles. She is also researching, writing in hopes of informing others about Native Hawaiians. This will help everyone understand our culture, how to be respectful whether you live in or are visiting Hawai'i, and better understand some struggles they may face.

Happy 2024! The Why Wait students are kicking off the new year by making great strides in their project goals! Kyleigh's project is called Clear Your Mind, and she is working to help teenagers and adults to cope with depression and anxiety. This is a problem because the depression and anxiety scales are increasing dramatically, and support can be expensive or feel inaccessible. Kyleigh has been hard at work fundraising and assembling baskets of items for people to relax and cope with depression and anxiety.

Here's Emma, who has started up the project Chieftain Closet Companion! Through this initiative, she is bringing in donations to the Chieftain Closet (a program at OHS that provides clothing and other necessities to students and families in need). Emma is also helping spread the word about how the Chieftain Closet is an amazing resource to not only students within the school district but also within the community. She's working on the website, helping to organize materials, collecting donations, and more!

Safe Letters is a project created by Sydney and Kloey with the ultimate goal of offering support for students who are struggling with mental health issues.
They've created a program called Safe Boxes, where students can write down how they are feeling, or what they are struggling with and get help. The letters first go to the advisors of the Mental Health Matters club at OHS, and then the advisors and Mental Health Matters students write back to the students to offer encouragement and resources for help.
There will be boxes available in both OHS and OMS, and these change-makers are creating "feelings boards" to support the younger students at OES and OIS. They're making a difference for students in the entire district!

Here is their wishlist of items they need to complete their boxes and other elements to their project. They would love your support! https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1WJNDISR3CGKS?ref_=wl_share

Here is Stacia with her thoughtful and ambitious project: Flowers For Our Elders! Her goal is to help ease the struggles that residents in nursing homes may go through and reduce the effects of loneliness that they endure. She hopes to offer joy and activities to keep residents engaged and socialized. Stacia has kicked off her project by working toward a goal of creating 200 hand-made flowers for residents. Lachelle and Madi are two students who are both on the move and like to move! Their project is called Beyond the Desk and was developed to encourage staff and students to increase movement in the classrooms. They strive to do this by adding standing desks in classrooms and renovating the courtyard to make it a more practical space for students to work. They have been fundraising in super creative ways--with Madi gathering pledges and completing a reading challenge (reading over 1000 pages in two weeks) and Lachelle taking orders for her delicious cake balls! Check out their website to see what they've been doing to make their goals a reality!

Kaylynn, the founder of Ties Fur Tails (gotta love the pun!), is creating felt-crafted items such as dog toys and kennel blankets to support local animal shelters that work their hardest to support our four-legged friends. Even though she is incredibly busy, this devoted animal lover volunteers at a local shelter once a week, and is even creating a featured "pet of the week" campaign that she will be sharing on her social media!

Meet Cy, the creator of Breaking Habits! This project was conceived to bring awareness to our daily digital habits - and help break them. The time we spend online can drain us and leave us exhausted and frustrated over the smallest things. Time spent using our bodies - whether creating, interacting, or playing, is essential to helping us break the monotony and create core memories. By using storytelling and animation, Cy hopes to inspire more thoughtful usage of our energy.

Today's featured change-maker is Georje! She is taking on the task of providing resources and knowledge to make their outdoor areas more sustainable. To learn about this topic, she has been busy collaborating with a mentor from the Audubon Society, researching, and sketching out yard designs in order to learn as much as she can about how to plan and implement environmentally friendly plants and trees for more earth-friendly lawns! She's working to develop user-friendly kits and instruction guides, and is even using her own lawn to test out her new knowledge! Georje has big goals, and is on her way to reaching them!
Fun Fact: Georje is the artist who developed our fabulous new Why Wait logo!
