Osceola Historical Society

Osceola Historical Society Osceola Historical Society strives to preserve the past in an effort to educate those in the future. The Osceola Historical Society (OHS) was organized in 1985.

In its
years of existence the OHS has accomplished many things, participated in and instigated many projects toward the preservation of the past. A sizeable bequest by Emily Olson, one of the founding members, allowed the Society to purchase the Andrew Jackson Clark House at 408 River Street. Now referred to as the Emily Olson house, it headquarters the OHS. Throughout its years the OHS has worke

d with downtown businesses to encourage restoration of their storefronts, purchased a microfilm reader housed at the public library and purchased the historic Soo Line Depot. The organization offers history-oriented programs at its monthly meetings. Board meetings are held the third Monday of the month at the Emily Olson House or online. General membership meetings are held periodically, along with programming on items of historic interest.

This is Fi****ms Safety from 1960. Left to right are: Molly Brown, Laverne Renspe, Jo Gerlach, Betty Neidermire (?), ---,---, Betty Thompson, ---,---. Can anyone fill in the missing names? I'm told they had a presentation by Ollie Eicher (a member of the Osceola Rod & Gun Club, and owner of the popcorn stand on Main Street), then shot their guns up at the airport.

And regarding Zion, here are a few more shots of the church that burned (built in 1894 -- actually the second church), and the new (current) building. The fire was caused by a lightning strike on July 8, 1923, and the new brick building was ready for worship July 1, 1924.

Here's another fun Farmington one, courtesy of Sharon Potting. The old Zion Lutheran church (before the fire), and the German school when it still sat up by the road. Hwy 35 looks like a real thoroughfare, doesn't it?
