habitat /ˈhabəˌtat/

A bird habitat is the specific natural environment providing the four essential necessities for a bird's survival and reproduction: food, water, shelter, and nesting sites.

We're thrilled each spring to see native birds like Eastern Bluebirds and Tree Swallows building nests in our bird houses!

We recently hosted author Diane Wilson for Seeds and Stories, a two-part writer's workshop celebrating her incredible book, The Seed Keepers.

As part of the month-long NEA Big Read Events, the workshop invited writers of all ages and skill levels to reflect on and write about special places in the St. Croix Valley and beyond. A shared love of nature ran through the group, reminding us of our personal connection to these places and our responsibility to protect them for future generations.

In part two, The Acreage's horticulturalist Cheryl Elliott and Diane led participants in making seed necklaces. Diane shared the Indigenous history of seed keeping and the reciprocal relationship we have with seeds. We wore our necklaces close to our hearts to nurture them and help them grow.

Fast forward a week and some of our little seeds are germinating!

The community vibe at the market is so warm and cozy that we asked our friend to do a little piece to capture the joy and magic!

If you've been to the market, drop a comment to let us know about your experience! Jump over to our YouTube channel to see the full length film.
