Our biggest category is ‘Container’. An entry in this category can be as small as a potted plant or as large as a planted trough. It can be a grouping of containers and hanging baskets. All of our entries were spectacular this year and all deserve to be recognized! thank you to our participants for creativity and hard work! Congratulations! The category is “In-Ground Gardens” and the winners are…
First Place: Wild Birds Unlimited
Second Place: Sweet Luna’s
Third Place: Lisa Ludwig Art
This is the second year in a row that Wild Birds has taken the title and it’s easy to see why. Just off the busy Route 1 corridor Jessica has created a natural oasis of native pollinator plants teeming with happy butterflies and birds.

The first Street Gardens Challenge winner, in the category of ‘New Entry’ is Essence Center for Beauty and Wellness. While Essence is not new to Old Saybrook, the salon is under new ownership and we are thrilled to have them join the Challenge. These containers of spilling petunias reminded us of carved driftwood. Great job!

Summer of 2026 had some gorgeous entries and the winners will be announced this week! The categories are: In-Ground Garden, Container Garden, Window Box, and Best New Entry.
The annual Street Gardens Challenge (formerly known as the “Street Gardens Recognition Program”) is a friendly competition sponsored by the Old Saybrook Garden Club to encourage civic beautification and promote business in the town of Old Saybrook. A “Street Garden” can be as small as a potted plant marking a shop entrance or as large as an in-ground garden.
