While You Were Sleeping 🔥

Early this morning, your Ogunquit Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 3771 responded on automatic mutual aid to the Town of York for a reported motor vehicle fire.
Captain Bourque and B-Shift responded aboard Engine 35. Due to the incident’s proximity to the Ogunquit town line, Ogunquit Engine 35 was the first-arriving suppression unit.
Crews quickly extinguished the vehicle fire, and no injuries were reported to civilians or firefighters.
Incidents like this highlight the importance of strong automatic-aid partnerships between neighboring communities, ensuring the closest available resources are responding when seconds matter.

Captain McKay and D-Shift took advantage of some downtime between calls today to refresh their motor vehicle extrication skills.
Vehicle extrication is a skill we may not use every day, but when the call comes in, there’s no time to knock the rust off. Staying sharp with our tools, techniques, and teamwork helps ensure our crews are ready to safely and efficiently handle whatever situation comes our way.

Last night members of the Ogunquit Fire Department had the opportunity to join our neighbors in Wells for National Night Out.

It was a great evening spent connecting with members of the community, meeting families, answering questions, and giving kids a chance to check out our apparatus and equipment. Events like these are a great reminder that building relationships with the people we serve is just as important as responding when they need us most.

A big thank you to the Wells Police, Ogunquit Police Department and everyone who helped organize another successful National Night Out. We appreciate the invitation and look forward to seeing everyone again next year!

Another Rescue by Marine 1 early this morning.

Ogunquit Fire Marine 1 was dispatched after a vessel struck Bibb Rock off the coast of Wells and began taking on water. Initial reports indicated multiple occupants on board, several of whom had sustained serious injuries.

Marine 1 quickly responded to the scene, where firefighters safely rescued all four passengers from the disabled vessel. Once aboard, emergency medical care was initiated immediately as crews transported the patients to Perkins Cove, where multiple EMS agencies and mutual aid partners were standing by to continue patient care and transport.

Incidents like this are a reminder of the unique challenges that come with providing emergency services on the water. From rapid access and patient stabilization to coordinating care with multiple agencies, successful outcomes depend on training, teamwork, and strong regional partnerships.

At approximately 7:30 a.m. this morning, the Ogunquit Fire Department was dispatched for a report of a person in distress off the point near the Israel Head Lighthouse.

Fortunately, this incident occurred during shift change, when both the oncoming and off-going crews were present, temporarily doubling our normal staffing. This allowed an ambulance and engine company to respond immediately with additional personnel.

Upon arrival, crews confirmed there were two victims who had made it out of the rip current but had become stranded on the rocks. Two rescue swimmers were deployed into the water while two firefighters simultaneously worked to access the victims from the shoreline over the rocks.

Once patient contact was made, it became clear that one victim required extensive assistance to be brought safely to shore. Rescue swimmers secured the patient onto a rescue board and safely swam them back to shore, where additional firefighters and EMS personnel immediately began patient care. Both victims were successfully rescued through the coordinated efforts of our crews.

Today’s rescue is a perfect example of why adequate staffing matters. Water rescues are complex, labor-intensive incidents that require multiple personnel performing different tasks at the same time from deploying rescue swimmers and establishing shoreline operations to providing immediate medical care and maintaining scene safety.

Because additional firefighters were available during shift change, we were able to perform multiple rescue operations simultaneously, reducing the time it took to reach the victims while ensuring the safety of both the public and our responders. Had this incident occurred under our normal staffing model, the operation would have required significantly fewer personnel on scene during those critical first moments, potentially delaying key rescue efforts while additional resources responded.

We are incredibly proud of the professionalism, teamwork, and dedication displayed by our firefighters this morning. We also thank our mutual aid partners Wells Professional Firefighters Association, IAFF Local 4652 for covering an additional call when we were committed to this incident and the assistance of Ogunquit Police Department throughout this incident.

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Howard.

Howard proudly served the Town of Ogunquit as a firefighter/paramedic and was a member of IAFF Local 3771 for 10 years before moving on to new opportunities. He was a dedicated firefighter, an exceptionally talented paramedic, and someone who made a lasting impact on those who had the privilege of serving alongside him.

Rest easy, brother.

Thank you for your leadership, mentorship, and unwavering commitment throughout your career. Your impact on this department will be felt for years to come.

Today marks the end of an era for the Ogunquit Fire Department as Captain David Moore begins his final shift.

David joined the department as a junior firefighter in 1978 and went on to become one of Ogunquit Fire Department’s first career firefighters. Over 37 years of full-time service, he advanced through the ranks to Captain and became an instrumental part of the OFD team.

Tomorrow morning, David will officially retire after an incredible 48 years of dedicated service to the Town of Ogunquit Fire Department and the community he has proudly served.
