Please join the WBA on Wednesday, June 17th at 6 PM at Mother Handsome in Oak Park as we ring out year with our last book club meeting until September! We are excited to be partnering with the Black Women Lawyers Association of Michigan.

Our group will be reading and discussing The Tiny Things Are Heavier by Esther Okonkwo, Ph.D. We are so excited and grateful that Dr. Okonkwo will be joining us for our discussion! The cost to attend is $10.

Please join us in honoring Hon. Tanya Grillo of the Macomb County Circuit Court as this year’s recipient of the Evelyn Forrest Distinguished Advocate Award. In addition to Judge Grillo’s work on the bench, she has a proven track record of advocating for her clients, promoting justice and equity in the legal profession, and notably, serving as current president of ! Judge Grillo will be honored at our Annual Dinner on May 7.

The Evelyn Forrest Distinguished Advocate Award celebrates the accomplishments of a lawyer who excels in her field and exemplifies professionalism, advocacy, and dedication to further opportunities for women in the law. The recipient has demonstrated professional excellence, civility, and integrity over the course of her career; displays an awareness of the needs and concerns of women through her work and community involvement; helps to advance the position of women in the legal profession; and is a member in good standing in the State Bar of Michigan and WLAM.

The WBA is excited to announce that Hon. Adrienne Young of the Michigan Court of Appeals has been selected as this year’s recipient of the Joan Young Judicial Excellence Award. Judge Young will be honored at our Annual Dinner on May 7 and introduced by Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Megan Cavanagh!

The Joan Young Judicial Excellence Award honors a member of the judiciary who openly demonstrates her commitment to securing the rights of women in society, promoting equality and social justice for all, and demonstrates the highest caliber of judicial integrity. The recipient advances the interest of women in the legal profession, both through her role on the bench and community activities. She works to improve relations between the legal profession and the public, contributes to the growth of other lawyers or members of the judiciary, and is a member of good standing of the State Bar of Michigan and a current or former member of the judiciary.
