Scouting for Bear. We spent time looking for areas that bears aren’t necessarily at now but where they potentially try to give might be later in the year during the hunting season.

Another example of a bear spreading their scent. Bears are solitary animals with massive home ranges, so they can’t exactly hang out a “No Trespassing” sign or jump on a dating app. Instead, they use scent marking as their primary network for communication. Think of it as a wilderness billboard, a resume, and a GPS tracker all rolled into one. During the breeding season (typically late spring to early summer), scent marking goes into overdrive.
For Males: Big boars use scent to advertise their presence, dominance, and physical size to potential mates.
For Females: Sows use scent to signal that they are in estrus and receptive to breeding. Territorial Mapping & Avoiding Fights
Bears don’t generally want to fight each other—it risks serious injury. Spreading scent allows them to establish a hierarchy without physical confrontation.
By leaving a scent high up on a tree, a dominant bear is essentially saying, “I am this tall, this big, and this is my neighborhood.” Smaller or subordinate bears can smell that mark, realize they are outmatched, and choose to slip away quietly to avoid a run-in.
