The Wildlands Conservancy

The Wildlands Conservancy We protect and rewild important landscapes and open them to the public for free. Visit one of our 25 nature preserves.

Founded in 1995, The Wildlands Conservancy (TWC) is dedicated to preserving the beauty and biodiversity of the earth and providing programs so that children may know the wonder and joy of nature. In working to achieve this mission, TWC has established the largest nonprofit nature preserve system on the West Coast, comprising 23 preserves encompassing 192,000 acres of diverse mountain, valley, dese

rt, river, and coastal landscapes. These preserves are open to the public free of charge for passive recreation, including camping, hiking, picnicking, birding, and more. Ultimately, saving our treasured landscapes from development means educating and instilling a love for nature in future generations. For this reason, TWC is also the stateโ€™s nonprofit leader in providing free outdoor education opportunities for California youth. Through these programs and our reverent stewardship of preservesโ€”visited by more than 1.5 million people per yearโ€”we foster a love and respect for life in all of its magnificent forms.

Earth Day is the perfect time to take a pause, appreciate the beauty around us, and reflect on ways to make it even better. That's why we show up year-round: stewarding the land, rewilding what was lost, and uplifting the next generation of stewards who will carry this work forward.

Migratory birds can't complete their journeys in one go. They depend on a chain of healthy stopover lands to rest, refuel, and keep going ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿœ๏ธ

Rufous Hummingbird tracking native blooms and Olive-sided Flycatchers in the high elevation forests are only a few of the travelers that can be found on our preserves as they stop to refuel. Riparian corridors, coastal estuaries, and high desert oases are some of the most critical fuel depots along their paths.

๐Ÿž๏ธ If you follow the water back far enough along the approximately 18,000-year-old river that flows through Whitewater Preserve, you'll see that it starts as snow on the peak of San Gorgonio. Mixed with runoff from previous rainfall, the water flows through three main tributaries, which coalesce into a single channel. This water typically flows year-round, but a significant portion disappears into the mountain itself, recharging the aquifers beneath Coachella Valley, then working through rock and sediment before returning as springs โ€” fed from above and stored below as it always has๐Ÿ’ง

๐Ÿœ๏ธ Ten years since the national monuments were designated ๐Ÿ”๏ธ

A decade ago, 1.75 million acres of California's Mojave Desert were protected forever as Sand to Snow and Mojave Trails National Monuments.

These landscapes go from scorching desert floor to the 11,503-foot summit of San Gorgonio Peak, covering five ecosystems. 1,600+ plant species. 240 bird species. Desert springs that keep bighorn sheep and tortoises alive. Some of the last truly dark skies in America. The most pristine stretch of Route 66 left.

But this didn't just happen. It took decades of work and the largest conservation land gift in U.S. historyโ€”580,000+ acres acquired and protected by The Wildlands Conservancy. Years of advocacy led by desert champion Senator Dianne Feinstein and our co-founder, David Myers, and joined by Tribal nations, local communities and businesses, environmental organizations, and countless others, finally made monument designation a reality.

A decade later, these monuments still face threats. But they're still standing. Still wild. Still worth fighting for.
