Today, members of the Novi Professional Firefighters hit the trails at Lakeshore Park—but not just for a hike or a ride!
We spent the afternoon training on how to quickly and safely locate injured patients within the park's 10 plus mile trail system. Whether you are mountain biking the singletrack or enjoying a walk through the woods, the terrain can sometimes be tricky to navigate. Our crews continually update their knowledge of these trails so we can reach you as fast as possible in an emergency.

COMMUNITY PSA:
If you ever need emergency care while out walking, running, or riding, look for the trail markers placed periodically along the route. If you can tell the 911 dispatcher the number on the last marker you passed (or the one you are currently looking at), it dramatically speeds up our ability to find you!

Happy trails, and stay safe, Novi!

During this holiday weekend, the Novi Professional Firefighters Union wants to take a moment to reflect on the significance of Memorial Day.

While this weekend usually marks the unofficial start of summer with family gatherings and backyard barbecues, its main purpose is much more. We want to remember the brave men and women of our Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness represent the absolute best of our country, and we all owe them a debt of gratitude that cannot be repaid.

Have a safe, reflective, and meaningful Memorial Day weekend.

Is Our Community Safety Being Compromised?

The City of Novi recently released a memorandum regarding the Fire Departments staffing model and the data inside tells a much different story than the Directors support for the current system.

The Director claims he wants to be responsible with taxpayer dollars but the departments own records show significant spending with little to show for it.

Wasted Recruitment Spending: The city spent over $10,000 on postcards and $4,500 per month on billboards that the Director admitted resulted in very few applications and no return on investment.

Bonus Money Gone: The city paid out $132,500 in hiring bonuses but has only recovered $17,000 from those who left before meeting their service obligation.

Retention Failure: The city hired 62 part-time firefighters since May 2022 but 42 of them have already left the organization

Unstaffed Stations: Despite the spending there have been 400 occurrences since 2022 where a shift was not staffed.

Increased Response Times: When Station Four is unstaffed average response times in that district jump from just over five minutes to over seven minutes.

Broken Promises: In 2017 City Council set a goal for 24/7 city-wide coverage yet the department has been unable to staff all stations 100% of the time since 2022.

The Contradiction:
The Director says he supports this model to be responsible with taxpayer dollars while the report shows thousands spent on failed recruiting and a 67% turnover rate that leaves our fire stations unstaffed.

Our firefighters and our citizens deserve a staffing model that actually works and uses our money effectively Read the full report, that we recived through FOIA, for yourself. Click link below

Director of Public Safety Erick Zinser recently stated to WXYZ that closing Fire Station 4 "will not impact services." However, in the exact same interview, he admitted that response times are currently ranging from a couple of minutes up to 12 minutes, with an average response time of 7:21.

You cannot drastically increase the wait time for an emergency response and claim that services are not impacted.

When a house is on fire or a resident is experiencing a cardiac event, a 12-minute wait is a massive, life-threatening impact. While we understand that not every single call will hit a perfect 5-minute mark due to traffic or weather, stretching response times to 12 minutes because an entire station is closed is a structural failure. It is not a minor daily variance.

There is a massive, public disconnect happening at the top levels of our city leadership.
On one hand, Mayor Fischer is actively boasting to the public and the press about how highly efficient and great this current service model is. On the other hand, the Director of Public Safety is on the news plainly admitting that there are many challenges with it.

We have to ask city leadership directly: Which one is it? Is the system a flawless, efficient model, or is it struggling to meet the demands of the city? Taxpayers deserve a straight answer.

We were unavailable at the time for comment but our local had contacted wxyz and will offer our statement.

A conversation about safety is heating up in Novi after the local firefighters union sounded alarms, saying Fire Station 4 has been closed over 100 times in the past year.

UPDATE: STATION 4 CLOSED FOR A THIRD CONSECUTIVE NIGHT

Novi residents, please be aware that Fire Station 4 is CLOSED again tonight from 6PM to 0600. This marks the third night in a row that this facility has been shut down.

We dont need to remind you what our mayor thinks works and does not work. We simply want to continue to keep you informed, Novi.

We ask that you speak up and ask your city officials why this is happening and what is exactly being done to stop these recurring closures.

Important Reminder: If you experience an emergency, please continue to dial 911 immediately. Dispatch will route the nearest available first responders from other active stations, though response times may be delayed.

Stay safe, stay informed, and make your voices heard.

UPDATE: STATION 4 CLOSED FOR A SECOND NIGHT
Novi residents, please be advised that Fire Station 4 is CLOSED again tonight from 6PM to 6AM, marking the second consecutive day of closing.
In a recent statement to WXYZ Detroit regarding the ongoing situation, Mayor Justin Fischer claimed, "Novi continues to operate a highly efficient service model, and significant changes to that model would come at a considerable cost to the taxpayers without a clear added benefit to residents." He further stated that "Novi is well equipped to maintain services with just two staffed stations open."
These statements raise critical questions for our community.
First, wouldn't consistent, 24/7 fire protection be a very clear and obvious benefit to the residents of Novi? It is difficult to understand how a system can be praised as a "highly efficient service model" when it is actively resulting in back-to-back closures of a vital emergency facility.

Second, the Novi Fire Department responded to over 9600 calls last year for a growing city of about 70,000 residents. Are we truly "well equipped" to handle that immense volume of emergencies with only two open stations and only four fire fighters on duty overnight?
Taxpayers deserve to know that their safety is the top priority, around the clock.

Important Reminder: Despite these ongoing closures, if you experience an emergency, please continue to dial 911 immediately. Dispatch will automatically route the nearest available first responders from other active stations to your location, though response times may be delayed.
Stay safe, stay informed, and make your voices heard, Novi.

Please be advised that Fire Station 4 is CLOSED tonight until at least 6 am.
This closure is the direct result of a critical and actively failing system currently in place at the Novi Fire department. Despite the fact that this system is malfunctioning to the point of forcing a facility shutdown tonight, Mayor Justin Fischer maintains that the system is "working". Surprisingly, he is even encouraging others to adopt this exact same failing system.
While there are no station closures during the daytime on weekdays, Mayor Fischer states that residents will experience no change in emergency response times, regardless of whether you call during a fully staffed weekday or during tonight's closure.
Important Reminder: If you experience an emergency, please continue to dial 911 immediately. Dispatch will automatically route the nearest available first responders from other active stations to your location.
Stay safe and stay informed, Novi.
