Still time to register for our first Seed Collecting Workshop!

Although, the focus will be learning to collect seeds for the seed library project, we will also have the opportunity to explore the grassland and cross timbers of the Prairie Crossroads Registered Natural Area. And Rusty Grimpe, the landowner, has a wealth of natural history knowledge about his property and Oklahoma in general — so expect some good stories!

Saving seeds, preserving genetic diversity

In the summer of 2018, the Oklahoma Natural Areas Registry initiated the Oklahoma Native Seed Library. Our plan is to collect seeds from iconic Oklahoma native plants. Our goal is to acquire seeds from around the state to represent a variety of genetic diversity of key species. In the beginning, we are focusing on easily identifiable grasses and wildflowers. As the collection grows, we plan to expand the species we collect and eventually we will offer seeds for native plant landscaping and restoration projects. We will host a seed collecting workshops to demonstrate how to collect and document seed collections for our seed library.
