American Legion Post 48 was chartered Nov. 19, 1919, only a little more than a year after the end of World War I and only eight months after the national American Legion was founded. Since its founding, Post 48 has traditionally been the largest or one of the larger posts in the state. As part of the North Carolina Department of the American Legion, the post is a member of Division 5 and District 22. Post 48 is proud to support the four pillars of the national American Legion: Americanism; Children and Youth; National Security; and Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation. Working through the four pillars, the post offers or supports a number of programs for the community, including American Legion Baseball, American Legion Softball, the High School Oratorical Scholarship Program, Boys State, Student Trooper, and Junior Shooting Sports. It also participates in other service and community activities alongside outside groups or individuals. Post 48 also has an American Legion Auxiliary chapter and a Sons of the American Legion squadron. The former offers Legionnaires' spouses an opportunity to serve, while the later includes sons and grandsons of men who did or could have joined the American Legion. for a social hour, 6 p.m. for a home-cooked meal and 7 p.m. for a business meeting at its meeting hall at 1 American Legion Ave., Newton NC 28658. Membership is open to any serving member of the Armed Forces or any honorably discharged veteran who served at least one day on active duty since Dec. 7, 1941.
