This is like talking about the elephant in the room with some agencies. Most agencies are doing a better job with this and some not so much. So much has changed over the years when dealing with PTSD. The problem is most officers won’t say anything because they don’t want to be labeled and don’t want everyone in the department talking about them instead of rallying for their fellow brother or sister in blue.

Congratulations on Your Retirement, K9 Axle!

Police Officer First Class Brittany Sigmund of the Salisbury Police Department is saying goodbye to an important chapter in her career as her longtime K9 partner, Axle, enters retirement.

The bond between a police officer and their K9 partner is something most people will never fully understand. For years, they train together, work together, protect their community together, and spend countless hours side by side. Your K9 partner isn’t simply with you during a shift, they become part of your everyday life and your family.

The Blue Line Network had the privilege of meeting PFC Sigmund and K9 Axle when they helped us at the Back the Blue event honoring Cpl. Keith Heacook, Delmar Police Department who was killed in the line of duty. We are grateful for their service and for the memories we have of seeing this incredible team together.

As we congratulate K9 Axle on a well-earned retirement, let us also remember the handler on the other end of that leash. For PFC Sigmund, adjusting to duty without the partner who has been by her side for so many years will undoubtedly be a major change.

K9 Axle, thank you for your years of loyal and dedicated service. May your retirement be filled with plenty of treats, belly rubs, long naps, and time with the person who has been beside you through it all.

And to PFC Brittany Sigmund, thank you for your dedication, sacrifice, and service, and for giving Axle a partner, handler, and family.

It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been a first responder, there are certain calls that stay with you.

Over the years, you respond to hundreds, maybe thousands, of calls. Some you never think about again, while others stay somewhere in the back of your mind for years. Sometimes the questions aren’t about why something happened, but about the surviving victims and what became of them afterward.

As first responders, we arrive during some of the worst moments of people’s lives, do what we are trained to do, and then move on to the next call. I often wonder about the people we leave behind.

I can’t imagine what a surviving teenager goes through after being involved in a tragic event, especially when they survive and lose a family member. I wonder what goes through their mind before help arrives, and how that experience changes them for the rest of their life.

Maybe it’s because I’m getting older and look at life differently now. There are calls I’ve been on that I barely remember, and then there are those few that, for whatever reason, never completely leave you.

For my fellow first responders:

Do you have calls that have stayed with you over the years?

Do you ever find yourself wondering about the survivors and where life took them afterward?

The other side of law enforcement the public does not see. A big shout out to this mother for believing in her local police department. Thank you to the officer of the Princess Anne Police Department for ensuring this young man had a tie that fit properly for his graduation. It’s the little things in life for some may be a big deal for someone else.
