Hi folks, ticks can be very small - this one was found crawling on a dog's foot after a walk. It showed up well against her light tan fur - another reason to wear light colored clothing and tuck pants into light colored or white socks when you're working or spending time in tick habitat!

If you hang just one feeder this season, chose a tube feeder. Pick a model with metal ports around the seed dispensers to deter squirrels who nibble the plastic. Hang it at least 5 feet off the ground, and 3 feet (or 30-plus feet) from a window to avoid bird collisions. When adding new seed to tube feeders, always empty the old seed out first.

Seed types: black oil sunflower, mixed seed, safflower, peanuts

Birds: Chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, goldfinches, siskins, purple and house finches

Looking for a tree for Fall interest. This is a Black Tupelo (Nyssa sylvatica), also known as black gum or sour gum. It is a medium-to-large deciduous tree native to eastern North America, recognized for its brilliant scarlet autumn foliage and wildlife value.

It typically grows 30 - 50 feet tall and spreads 20 to 30 feet with glossy, dark green summer leaves that turn a striking mix of fluorescent yellow, orange, bright red, and purple in the fall.
It has small, inconspicuous greenish-white spring flowers that yield small, dark blue-black oval fruits favored by birds and other mammals.

This maple leaf seems to have 2 issues…..

Tar spot of maple is a fungal disease that affects only maples. This disease, however, is considered a cosmetic problem, rather than a real health issue for trees. Tar spot is caused by three related fungi, Rhytisma acerinum, R. americanum, and R. punctatum. Rake and destroy or compost fallen leaves in the autumn to reduce overwintering spores.

Powdery mildew is a common fungal disease of trees and shrubs. It is typically found when the humidity is high. The infection doesn’t actually occur when it’s raining, or when the garden is being watered by a sprinkler, as the fungus cannot set up its takeover on a wet surface. Powdery mildew does not cause significant damage to the health of the tree and does not require management. The most effective way to avoid reinfection in spring is to remove the fallen leaves as soon as possible and dispose of them. Your home compost likely will not produce the heat needed to kill off this fungus.

Your last mowing for the lawn should be slightly shorter, but don’t scalp them. This shorter mowing height helps decrease the environment for turf diseases that can occur under the snow.

AND don't forget to mow those leaves into the lawn. They break down quickly and return vital nutrients—like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium—back into the soil. The organic matter feeds beneficial microbes and earthworms, improves soil structure, and helps retain moisture.

Thinking about ticks... a recent webinar from Cornell IPM included information on lawns and tree leaf management and how leaf management can impact deer tick populations. The information provided was from two reports, one from 2020 and the other from 2024.
Both concluded the following: There was no reduction in tick populations when leaves were left on the lawn vs removing leaves from the lawn.
However, when leaves were blown into lawn/wooded edges, populations of tick nymphs were 3x's higher the following spring. Deeper leaves provide moisture and cover so tick nymphs can more easily survive.
When leaves are piled or composted, it is recommended to locate them in an out of the way, sunny location and turn the pile regularly.
As always, it's important to take steps to protect yourself from tick exposure and do tick checks regularlly. Hunters, this includes you!

Bird feeding stations may not be as active in October. In the fall, nature provides a buffet of natural foods. Birds will almost always choose those natural options over feeder seeds. They are currently feasting on wild seeds and cones, berries and late season insects and larvae from tree bark.

Be patient. As frost kills off the insects and the wild seed crops dwindle heading into November, birds will return to your feeders.
