BRINGING HOPE TO WIDOWS 🙏

Just this week, women in Eselengei and Osoit met in their respective groups for orientation. In Eselengei, WILK Field Officer Nelson Tinayo spoke to the group and encouraged them to share their experiences. In Osoit, WILK Field Officer Cate Olegei helped the women open up to each other. In this way, both groups will learn to trust each other and the field officers, which is crucial during training.

Today, the Osoit group had its first official training session. WILK Co-Founder Joseph Larasha was there to introduce them to business skills that they’ll learn about in detail during later sessions. We’re eager to see how these women put their new skills into practice later this year!

BRINGING WATER TO ORARAIT 🌊

Our current WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) Project is making progress! We drilled the well in February after some weather delays, thanks to the rainy season. Once test pumping was complete, we waited for the weather to cooperate so we could start construction.

We use high-quality materials and hire skilled workers to complete this part of the project. Pipes and the water pump are now installed, and we'll use concrete to elephant-proof the borehole.

We don't cut corners, which means the community will be set up for success!

THANK YOU FOR TURNING WINE INTO WATER! 🍷➡💧

Last week, we had a lovely night of wine tasting, fellowship, writing Hai-Cows, and raising support for our new campaign: Seeds of Hope and Cows Galore.

The winner of our Hai-Cow drawing was Linda Landis, our long-time board member and friend. Not only was her Hai-Cow picked randomly, but it was also beautiful. Here it is:

Resting in the grass
Hot sun beating on my back
A roar disrupts all

Another one of our favorites came from our dear volunteer, Kathy Hilmer!

A cow in a field
The sweet clover at her hooves
So contended now.

But the Hai-Cow creations didn't stop on Thursday. On Friday morning, we received an email from our dear friend, Cynthia Miller, who dreamed cow-themed dreams. Here is one of her creations:

Some folks sell ploughshares
At WILK, we offer cow shares
Each heifer a blessing!

We're glad so many of you joined us at Deerfield Wines. Thank you for being a part of our community of supporters. We are grateful for you!

MAGIS FOR MAJI 🇰🇪

The third annual Magis for Maji Water Walk was held this past Sunday, April 26, at Saint Joseph's University! We once again partnered with our friends in the Beautiful Social Research Collaborative, a Communications department course where students collaborate with nonprofits.

This semester, the group ran three pop-up sales across campus, raising over $1,200 for WILK! The walk on Sunday was well attended by students, professors, family, and community members. We walked around campus in solidarity with those in Kenya who lack access to clean water.

Magis is a Jesuit saying that means “more.” Maji is Swahili for “water.” If you would like to host a Water Walk at your school, church, or organization—or if you’d like to set up a pop-up sale—reach out to Aaron at [email protected].

NEW GRANT AND NEW PROGRAM ALERT 🍃

We are happy to share that we received a $45,905.51 grant from Mawr Presbyterian Church to support our new “Double LAB” Program! This grant will help us build a model farm to help our Livestock as a Business (LAB) farmers and grass managers grow nutritious livestock feed for their cows.

This program will empower Maasai farmers by placing decision-making, capital, and new knowledge squarely in their hands. During Phase 1, we’ll irrigate land and select specific grasses for livestock. Our hope is to shift the cultural perspective of saving, storing, and using grass as food. In part, this is a drought preparation technique, but it will also benefit livestock all year long.

Once established, we’ll invite 850 LAB graduates, the members of our 10 active LAB groups, the Youth Entrepreneurship Program (YEP) members who are investing in Livestock farming, and grass managers we trained in 2024 to learn about this new way to take care of livestock.

We’re so grateful to Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church for trusting us with this important work!
