Newark STAR Rotary is raising money with our “Pets for Polio” fundraiser. Visit our booth at Community Day, at Newark Natural Food Farmers Market or Turkey Trot to buy your bandana today. They are $10 and net proceeds go to eradicate polio and support vaccinations around the world through Rotary’s Polio Plus program. Newark STAR Rotary club visited the Newark Arts Alliance for today’s meeting. They had a sneak preview of Born in Spirit: Painted in Light by Angelica Leonor Vidro. During the meeting, they honored Kelly Bachman's service as club President last Rotary year and featured Pamela Draper, executive director of the Newark Arts Alliance as our speaker.

At just 15 years old, Yousafzai was thrust onto the public stage after the Taliban's attack on her life — a failed effort to silence the young activist. Today, she continues her work of empowering and educating girls around the world through her nonprofit, Malala Fund. The senior producer and host of Taiwan Talks, Yin Khvat, sits down with Yousafzai to discuss mental health, identity, and her activism.

Jasper Verucci currently works as an Outreach Coordinator for Delaware’s homeless population. His passion for community, human rights, and non violence began in high school and led him to the University for Peace. Here, Jasper worked towards a Masters in International Peace Studies, training with peacebuilders around the globe in conflict resolution, mediation, and community building. Returning home to Delaware, he hosted zine-making sessions with local Delawareans and international individuals to educate about peace and empower them to use zines to write about peace. The participants’ zines were gathered into his capstone project: the Zines 4 Peace Collection. While continuing to work in community service, Jasper’s vision is to create multiple volumes of the Zines 4 Peace Collection with the goal to create local-global dialogues around peace that empower and strengthen communities- and ultimately build world peace! Earlier last week, Rotarians joined DelawareDOT and DMVDelaware leaders at the Delaware City and Wilmington DMV locations to celebrate Employee Appreciation Week and deliver nearly 150 handwritten cards of thanks and support to the workers. The men and women at both locations were personally impacted by the tragic shooting that occurred at the Wilmington location last year, and we wanted to let them know that their service and perseverance are appreciated and do not go unnoticed.

Newark STAR attends the Rotary District 7630 conference

On Saturday, April 18th, Newark STAR Rotarians joined with over 100 other Rotarians from District 7630 to Learn, Celebrate and do Service for our communities. In a climate that is polarized with politics and religion, it is important that we gather, in spite of our differences to serve each other and solve problems for our communities. This is Rotary’s greatest strength. Club members raised money for Easter Seals Camp Fairleigh, Packed meals for the hungry, wrote thank you cards to the DMV workers traumatized by the shooting of a police officer early this year, packed birthday boxes for people receiving Meals on Wheels. Our district is raising over $70,000 for a scholarship for a local student to attend King’s College, London. In April, Lyn received the Paul Harris Fellow Award!!! The Paul Harris Fellow recognition is one of Rotary's most prestigious honors, acknowledging individuals who demonstrate exceptional commitment to Rotary's mission of service above self. This recognition is awarded to those who contribute, or have contributions made in their name, of $1,000 to The Rotary Foundation, though it also serves as an award for exemplary work in community service or helping those in need. Josie’s Grace (Named for Anne’s 2 daughters) mission is to deliver an accessible perinatal healing experience for the mental health of mothers and babies.
