Green, fleshy, alternating oval-shaped leaves
Leaves clustered in groups along stems Pinkish-green
smooth, succulent stems Stems branch from a central
point to make a circular, ground-covering mat
Secretes clear liquid when stem is broken
๐๐ค๐ฌ ๐ฉ๐ค ๐๐๐ง๐ซ๐๐จ๐ฉ:
Cut a stem to ensure that it secretes clear liquid to
confirm the identification of purslane, not the milky sap
characteristic of the toxic look-alike, Prostrate spurge.
Once confirmed, either snip the stems or pull up the
entire plant by the root. If pulled up, remove the root.
The rest of the plant is edible; rinse thoroughly in water
with a splash of vinegar to wash.
Toss it into a salad, garnish a dish, or make it the main
course! The leaves can be stripped from the stems, or
the plant can also be eaten whole, as preferred.
