The mission of the Lighthouse is to educate, empower, and employ people who are visually impaired and blind.

The Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired and Blind is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that has been providing vision rehabilitation since 1983. The Lighthouse provides vision habilitation and rehabilitation and adjustment to blindness services to people of all ages who have experienced vision impairment. Lighthouse has served tens of thousands of people who are visually impaired since its incorporation. So far, our youngest client was 3 months old and our oldest client was over 100 years of age. 🎉 CELEBRATING 5 YEARS OF SOFYA MATKARIM! 🎉

Some people don't just become part of an organization… they become part of its heart. ❤️

In October 2026, we proudly celebrated 5 years of Sofya Matkarim as a member of the Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired and Blind team!

But Sofya's Lighthouse story started long before she became an employee. She first came to us as a client, then became a regular volunteer, and five years ago, we were fortunate enough to invite her to join our team as our Youth Coordinator Assistant. And let us just say… WE ARE THE LUCKY ONES! ❤️

Sofya is the definition of a go-getter. She is always willing to jump in wherever she is needed, and there is very little she won't take on!

Whether she is:

🌟 Assisting with our children's groups and teen transition program

🌟 Helping coordinate activities and supporting our outreach efforts

🌟 Stepping in to cover other departments and team members

🌟 Tackling data entry and all the behind-the-scenes details

🌟 Serving as an instrumental support leader in our culinary program

🌟 Spending overnights with our teens at weeklong STEAM summer camp in Davenport…

Sofya shows up, steps up, and makes a difference!

And then there is her willingness to LEAD BY EXAMPLE. At a recent activity with the children and teens, Sofya wanted to encourage them to step outside their comfort zones, try new things, and not be afraid. So what did she do? She strapped on her helmet and suit and did the iFLY indoor skydiving experience! 🙌

That's Sofya! She doesn't just encourage our children and teens to be brave, confident, and adventurous… she shows them what that looks like!

Her journey is a reminder that sometimes the people whose lives we touch become the very people who help us carry our mission forward.

Sofya, thank you for your dedication, your flexibility, your willingness to say YES, and most importantly, your heart for our clients and our mission. Your impact reaches far beyond your job description, and our children, teens, clients, and entire team are better because you are part of our Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired and Blind; Pasco, Hernando and Citrus.

Five years down, and we are so excited for what lies ahead!

LVIB's 3rd Annual Bowling in the Dark is on December 1, 2026, at 5 p.m. at Lane Glo Bowl South in New Port Richey.
