On National Day of the Deployed, we recognize the ongoing service and sacrifices of Coast Guard members and all members of our Armed Forces serving far from home, along with the families and supporters who stand behind them.

After a 112-day patrol in Alaska, USCGC Munro (WMSL 755) returned to its homeport at Base Alameda on October 9, 2026.

The cutter is named after Signalman First Class Douglas Munro, who, in 1943, became the first and only Coast Guardsman to receive the Medal of Honor.

His medal will have a permanent home in the National Coast Guard Museum, which opens in New London, Connecticut, on August 4, 2027.

At sea, the crew is also the fire department.

Fire safety and firefighting are essential parts of Coast Guard training, preparing crew members to respond to onboard emergencies.

For day 3 of our mini series, we’re highlighting Coast Guard Cutter Stratton’s crew as they train to fight onboard fires and protect their ship and everyone aboard.

Firefighting takes teamwork, and sometimes, a ride from the Coast Guard.

During a shipyard fire in East Boothbay, Maine, on July 11, 2008, a crew from Coast Guard Station Boothbay Harbor transported local firefighters aboard a 47-foot motor lifeboat, helping them reach areas they otherwise couldn’t access.

Our mini series continues with a look at how the Coast Guard supports local emergency responders.

In this photo, the Coast Guard Base Kodiak Fire Department responds to an alarm at Air Station Kodiak in Alaska. Working around aircraft makes fire safety and emergency preparedness essential to protecting personnel and equipment.
