Celebrating 50 Years of Women at USCGA!

Last Sunday during Homecoming, our 50 Years of Women Networking Brunch brought together alumni, cadets, and friends to make connections, share the work happening across the Long Blue Line, and look ahead to what’s next. From the 50 Years of Women multimedia project and the HerStory podcast to the work of the Advisory Board on Women, we reflected on how far we’ve come and the work still ahead.

🎙️ Now Streaming: 50 Years of HerStory Podcast Episode 8: There's Not Another Version of Me with ADM Linda Fagan '85 (Ret.)

This episode welcomes ADM Linda Fagan '85, USCG (Ret.), the 27th Commandant of the Coast Guard and the first woman to lead a U.S. military service. She reported in 1981, a year after the first women graduated, and was one of only 16 women in her class to graduate.

Linda is candid that she didn't love her time as a cadet. She shares how upperclassmen kept one another from leaving by paying it forward, and how her own views on the Academy changed when one of her daughters came through decades later and found a very different place.

Linda also reflects openly on how her time as Commandant ended, on setting down the anger, and on getting to know herself again without the armor of the job. She leaves today's cadets a challenge: culture exists whether you talk about it or not, and each person owns their piece of it.

Closing out the episode, LT Victoria Sparacino ‘18 shares a special "Moment of Gratitude," a heartfelt shout-out to someone who made a lasting impact on her journey.

Beautiful weather set the stage for an unforgettable Saturday of Homecoming! More than 1,500 alumni, family, and friends from the Class of 1956 through the Class of 2021 returned to the Academy to reconnect, reminisce, and make new memories.

From class tailgates and dinners to the Class Walk-On, football game, and everything in between, the weekend was filled with laughter, connection, and plenty of Coast Guard pride.

Friday at Homecoming is all about celebrating the Class of 1976! We’re proud to welcome our 50th reunion class back to the Academy and celebrate five decades of the Long Blue Line. Welcome home, Bears!

In the summer of 1972, four-hundred-fifty-two arrived at the Academy as a collection of young men with widely different backgrounds and without an understanding of the Coast Guard Academy or the U.S. Coast Guard. On June 2, 1976, two-hundred forty-one left as members of the Coast Guard Academy Class of 1976.

Since then, the Class of 1976 has contributed significant time, energy, and resources to the Academy including a $1,001,976 contribution to the Maritime Center of Excellence. One served as Assistant Superintendent. One has provided 25 years of mentoring cadets through the AIM program. Two have authored and donated leadership books, “Unauthorized Progress” and “Courage and Honor - The Hundred” to graduating officers. A dozen others expanded the Mid-Cadet Training Course by guiding 2/c Cadre through the leadership lessons of The Finest Hours, arguably the greatest small-boat rescue in Coast Guard history.

In and out of the Coast Guard, every one of them has made his mark. Congratulations to the Class of 1976!

Cadets will soon have 20 new ZIM Sailing dinghies on the waterfront thanks to a $250,000 gift from the Class of ’79!

The new boats will support both the Collegiate Sailing team and give cadets more opportunities to learn and practice sailing as part of their Academy experience. From AIM through senior year, time on the water plays an important role in developing the skills and confidence cadets carry with them beyond the Academy.

The gift builds on the Class of 1979’s previous support of the waterfront and Academy, including the Class of ’79 Endowment for the Coastal Sail Training Program, a $500,000 contribution to the Maritime Center of Excellence, and support for the Collaboration Center.

We’re blown away by Family Weekend!

Despite the wind and weather, it has been wonderful to see families and loved ones back at the Academy, sharing smiles, making memories, and celebrating their cadets.

We loved hosting our Legacy Family Lunch, bringing alumni parents and their cadets together to share stories and connect across the Long Blue Line. A big thank you to our Link in the Chain classes for joining us, sharing their experiences, and offering advice to the next generation!

🎙️ Now Streaming: 50 Years of HerStory Podcast Episode 7: It Was the People with CDR Andrea Smith '01 (Ret.)

What makes someone stay in a place they were ready to leave?

In this episode of 50 Years of HerStory, Nicolle Bogden ’12 sits down with CDR Andrea (Parker) Smith ’01 (Ret.), who arrived at the Coast Guard Academy in 1997 as one of three African American women in her class, planning to stay for just one year. Four years later, she graduated as the first African American woman to earn an engineering degree from the Academy. Her career took her from September 11th in New York to Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and back to the Academy as an instructor. Andrea shares why it was the people, not the missions, who kept her in the Coast Guard, and the importance of finding community and defining success on her own terms.

Andrea also opens up about her family’s journey from fertility treatment to adoption and the Coast Guard family that supported them along the way. Asked what she would tell herself before graduating in 2001, her answer is simple: trust yourself, because no one else can give you your confidence. Her story is a reminder that a career is rarely built on a plan, but on the people who pour into you along the way.

Closing out the episode, CDR Erica Mohr '96, USCG (ret.), shares a special "Moment of Gratitude," a heartfelt shout-out to someone who made a lasting impact on her journey. It's a moving reminder that behind every success story are the people who believed in us first.

“Personnel are truly the Coast Guard’s greatest asset.” – LT Zoe Robiskie

In the latest issue of The Bulletin, LT Zoe Robiskie ’20, JTF-M Strategy Planning Section, shares her journey from the Coast Guard Academy to her current role with DHS Joint Task Force–Maritime, where she works alongside federal, state, local, tribal, and international partners to address national security threats.

She also offers advice for alumni looking to advance in Response Ashore, emphasizing the importance of continuous learning, building strong professional relationships, and leveraging the unique strengths of those around you.
