This Memorial Day Weekend as well as the rest of the year, please remember all those who gave their life for you, me and the rest of the Americans to keep us all free. I heard an eye opening statistic today. Since 9-11 about 7,000 troops died the line of duty. However since 9-11 over 30,000 have committed su***de. As many of you know, I am part of the band Schtillrokken and we support organizations that help first responders and our great military folks. I am a member the VFW Auxiliary and a volunteer for a local 501c3 charitable organization called WARRIORS WALK in New Lenox. Warriors Walk works to help prevent su***de among our veterans. We lose 22 a day to su***de. If you have time and would like to join a great organization as a volunteer, Warriors Walk would be a great one to join. If you don't have the time, a donation would be great. If perhaps you might prefer something different, go to the Featured section of the Schtillrokken face book page and you will find a list with links to websites/pages of other great veteran's organizations as well as Tunnel To Towers which helps vets and first responders as well. PLEASE remember our fallen and help us to help those who made it home but are struggling. If you're a veteran you can find information from the listed websites that may help you get information or maybe you want to join one. Thank you and God Bless our veterans!

This week's Wisdom Wednesday wise words are "You don't always need a plan. Sometimes you just need to breathe, trust, let go and see what happens" (Mandy Hale). Are you the type who prefers planning ahead? Or do you go with the flow?

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, so the first Wisdom Wednesday of May espouses the importance of speaking up when struggling, spoken by the incomparable Fred Rogers of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood.

“Anything that’s human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable can be more manageable. When we can talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary.”

Today is Loyalty Day!

The VFW Auxiliary has been involved in Loyalty Day since its inception, just over a century ago. In fact, it was Bessie Hanken, not yet a VFW Auxiliary National President, who was instrumental in championing the creation of this holiday, a response to the growing threat of communism that had overtaken May Day.

In 1921, the first Americanization Day, as it was originallyknown, was celebrated. Two years later, Hanken would survive an assassination attempt made on the life of a politician with whom she was presenting at an anti-communism protest – though three bullets did strike the coat draped across her shoulders.

Loyalty Day grew in popularity and importance as the United States grappled with the looming dangers of fascism and Naziism in the 1930s and ‘40s and finally became an official holiday by Presidential Proclamation in 1959.

You can read more about the history of Loyalty Day, and, in particular, the VFW and VFW Auxiliary’s involvement in the holiday, in the May 2025 edition of VFW Auxiliary Magazine. Flip to Our History on Page 21.
