In her latest Director’s Spotlight for Preservation in Print, PRC Executive Director Kristin Gisleson Palmer explores why Section 106 is such an important tool for historic preservation—and what New Orleans stands to lose if these protections are weakened.

Section 106 requires federal agencies to consider how projects they fund or permit may affect historic properties and consult with communities about those impacts. It gives residents, neighborhood groups and preservation advocates an opportunity to speak up before decisions are made.

New Orleans knows what's at stake. From the Claiborne Expressway to the destruction of historic neighborhoods, our city's history shows how major infrastructure projects can permanently reshape communities.

Without meaningful Section 106 review, residents could lose an important opportunity to raise concerns about projects that threaten the historic places and neighborhoods they call home.

As the National Historic Preservation Act marks its 60th anniversary, Kristin makes the case for protecting this essential public process.
