In Honor of 25 Years of Service

Detective William J Shafer #4252

Detective Shafer was hired by Southern Regional Police in January 2001, after his civilian career as a Paramedic for York and Memorial Hospitals and as a Medic for the York City and Pennsylvania State Police Tactical Teams. Detective Shafer was also a York County Deputy Coroner. He started his police career as a patrol officer and soon started working as part-time Detective as well. In August of 2013, Detective Shafer was assigned as full-time Detective for the department. He was also assigned to the York County Forensic Team and CARE Team as well as a department Fi****ms Instructor. For the last two years of his tenure, Detective Shafer served as the School Resource Officer for the Southeastern School District.

Detective Shafer retired on June 5th, 2026 after 25 years of service.

Pursuit of stolen vehicle - Shrewsbury Borough

On June 9, 2026 at approximately 0730 hours officers of the Southern Regional Police Department were alerted that a stolen car was in the area of Chick Fil A in Shrewsbury Borough. According to York County 911, the owner of the stolen vehicle reported that someone had just used her stolen credit card at this location. An officer located and attempted to stop the stolen vehicle, but it refused to stop and a pursuit was initiated. The vehicle fled through several municipalities and then into Hopewell Township where the vehicle became disabled in the area of Plank Rd and Maddox Rd. The driver fled on foot while two other suspects were taken into custody. A perimeter was established with the assistance of the Pennsylvania State Police. A short time later an officer located and arrested the driver. All three suspects are juveniles and charges are pending.

UPDATE: The search in Lake Marburg at Codorus State Park is complete. The lake will reopen for normal operations on Tuesday, June 9 at 8:00 AM. The incident remains under investigation.

ATTENTION: Lake Marburg will be closed today, June 8, as search efforts continue for a missing boater who was last seen at approximately 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 6. The incident involves an individual on an unpowered watercraft who is believed to have entered the water during a period of inclement weather. The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission are investigating the incident.
