From the Commander — WE’RE COMING BACK 🇺🇸
Tomorrow is a very special day at Howard R. Smith American Legion Post 137 as we gather for our Fall Flag Retirement Ceremony.
There is something especially meaningful about holding this ceremony now.
Over the past several weeks, our Post has been tested. We have seen damage and disruption, but we have also seen something much stronger—the determination of our members, volunteers, families, friends, and community.
To every person who has shown up, worked, donated, encouraged us, checked on us, or simply asked how they could help: thank you.
What you see at Post 137 today didn't happen because of one or two people. It happened because people came together, rolled up their sleeves, and refused to let a difficult situation define us.
We still have work ahead of us. The Post isn't completely finished, and there are things we will continue putting back together in the weeks ahead. But we've reached an important milestone: After tomorrow, Post 137 will once again be open and welcoming our members and guests.
For the time being, we will operate with a limited food menu, and our hours may vary depending on attendance each evening. We ask for a little patience as we work our way back toward normal operations.
And we're happy to say that some familiar sounds are coming back too—Karaoke returns Saturday night! 🎤🇺🇸 More information about future karaoke nights and other activities will be published soon.
Tomorrow, though, we first come together for something bigger than ourselves. Our Flag Retirement Ceremony is an opportunity to honor the flag under which generations of Americans have served, sacrificed, and come home. I hope our members will join us as we give these flags the dignified retirement they deserve.
This rebuilding effort has reminded me of something important: Post 137 is not the building. It is the people inside it. We took a hard hit. We got back to work. And now we're opening our doors again.
There is still work to do—but we're doing it together.
Thank you for believing in this Post, for supporting one another, and for helping us continue building a Post 137 that serves our veterans, our families, and our community for generations to come.
The doors are opening again. Welcome home.
For God and Country!
