62 days with no contract!! As we move toward mediation, we'd like for you to get to know the library's staff a little better, and why we love working for you!

51 days with no contract!! As we wait for mediation to begin next month, here's something tangible you can do to help. The library Board of Trustees resumes their regular monthly meetings on Tuesday, September 1st at 7 pm in the Large Meeting Room at the library. The Public Comment portion of these meetings is an excellent time for our community to speak up in support of the library and its staff! Come tell the trustees what you value about this library, and the people who work here! Your voice matters -- together, we're strong!

We're now on Day 31 with no new contract. We proposed dates in August for mediation, but the library negotiating team did not have any dates available, so now we wait until mid-September to start the mediation process. This is especially galling because library administration and the city are refusing to honor any new contract retroactively, as is standard -- including refusing to give staff retroactive pay for any salary increase we may get. By their own admission, this is to "encourage" us to accept whatever unfair deal they offer. Holding money over the heads of hard-working, loyal staff is inexcusable. If you agree, and if you support your library's workers, please make your voices heard! Contact library director Jennifer McCormack ([email protected]), Mayor Donchess ([email protected]) and the Board of Aldermen ([email protected]) today!

It's Day 10 with no contract! Today, we want to explain one of the issues that we're standing our ground on: fair pay. The NPLE is asking for a modest pay increase, to keep up with the cost of living and inflation. We're all stretched thin and struggling, and it's not fair that city employees who often work 6 days a week serving their community can't make ends meet.

In addition, the city is insisting that any pay increase we may get will not go into effect until 75 days AFTER a new contract is fully completed and ratified. That process can take weeks, and adding an extra 75 days to it is unreasonable. Further, the city's council is refusing to give library staff the retroactive pay increase that they would be owed once the contract is ratified. As long as we hold out for a fair deal, the city's side will continue to hold money over our heads as a threat. It's unreasonable and unnecessary punishment against the folks who work hard every day to make the library such a vibrant, bustling hub of the community.

If you stand with us, please let Mayor Donchess ([email protected]), library director Jennifer McCormack ([email protected]), and the Board of Aldermen ([email protected]) know that your library staff deserve fair treatment and a fair contract!
