There are so many ways to support the Outer Banks Relief Foundation, Inc., and Albemarle Area United Way, Inc is one of them! 💙 Whether you give personally, give through your workplace, or volunteer your time, there are many ways to make a difference for our neighbors.

Albemarle Area United Way is a wonderful example of community support in action. They support our work here at the Outer Banks Relief Foundation and many other local organizations through grants, volunteer recruitment, and getting things done during their annual Day of Caring. They are also a valued participant in our quarterly Community Services Collaborative meetings, where local organizations come together to share resources, make connections, and learn from one another.

Through ALICE Voices, AAUW helps bring attention to the experiences of Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed households: working families who earn above the federal poverty level but still struggle to afford basic necessities. They also pioneered NC 211, helping connect North Carolinians with health and human services when they need them.

We are so grateful for AAUW and all the ways they support OBRF and our community. ✨🕊️💙

Come celebrate September 12 from 4:00 - 10:00 pm at Swells'a Brewing Beer Company, featuring the Which Craft Surf Fest Art Show, with a portion of proceeds supporting the Outer Banks Relief Foundation, Inc. 💙✨Thank you all for including us & for celebrating in a way that gives back to our community!

See ya at Swells'a Brewing Beer Company, Sept. 12, from 4-10pm our 15th Anniversary B-Day Bash, featuring live music by Suzie Jaccuzzi, Scott Franson, and Anchor Blazer, a WhichCraft Surf Fest Art Show with works by staff photogs and artists and a reveal of this year’s funky shapes — with a portion of proceeds supporting the Outer Banks Relief Foundation, Inc. — plus mag swag and a retrospective slideshow! 4-10pm. “I was soaping up in the shower, and I knew right away,” Karla told us. She immediately called her sister and said, “I have cancer. I found a big knot.”

A visit to UVA Breast Cancer Center confirmed she had stage 2 breast cancer that had traveled to her lymph nodes. Karla underwent a mastectomy and 5 of 6 rounds of chemotherapy. Her team of doctors felt she wasn’t strong enough for the sixth round.

Because of her aggressive treatment and recovery time, Karla was unable to return to work, creating more hardship in the form of overdue bills. Most important to Karla was to make sure she stayed current on the auto loan for her water-blue Jeep, affectionately named Mermaid.

“If I lost that Jeep, I’d lose my lifeline to my job, to my treatments. The Relief Foundation has been a lifesaver for me to be able to help me keep my feet on the ground and not have to worry about the car payments while I got better.”

Today, Karla is on the mend and has returned to a job that she “truly, truly loves” as a guide for a wild horse tour company in Corolla.

She enjoys a healthy lifestyle and reminds everyone she meets of the importance of self-exams and yearly mammograms.

“I am a survivor. I went to a lot of places before a friend told me about the Relief Foundation. I am blessed with family and good people to help me.”

Over 20 years ago, our founders were inspired by a simple belief: no local family should have to face both a devastating diagnosis and financial ruin. 💙🕊️✨

Today, the doors of the Outer Banks Relief Foundation remain open because of their vision, and because of a generous community that continues to make relief possible for our neighbors when they need it most. 💙

The Outer Banks Relief Foundation, Inc. is grateful to be among this year’s recipients of an Outer Banks Health Community Benefit Grant. 🩵 Our grant will help neighbors facing cancer by covering essential household expenses during treatment, easing financial burdens during an incredibly difficult time. 🕊️
