Principal Mr. Jason Forrister spoke to students across Cherokee County Schools of Innovation today about something that reaches far beyond academics: what it means to become a responsible, successful, and compassionate member of a community.
Students come to CCSI through different programs and with different stories. For some, this campus represents a new beginning. For others, it provides an opportunity to complete advanced coursework, earn college credit, gain industry credentials, or prepare for a meaningful career. Regardless of the pathway, Mr. Forrister reminded students that every choice they make today can move them closer to or farther away from the future they want.
At the center of his message was a powerful idea: between what happens to us and how we respond, there is a moment in which we have the freedom to choose. Whether students are facing a difficult assignment, a disagreement with another person, or a frustrating situation, they still have power over their response. That pause can be the difference between making a problem worse and choosing an action that leads to growth, resolution, and freedom.
Mr. Forrister encouraged students to practice empathy by considering how their words and actions affect others. Before posting something hurtful on social media, spreading a rumor, or reacting in anger, students were asked to pause and consider whether they would want someone to do the same thing to them. Disrespectful choices do more than hurt another person. They take time, attention, and energy away from everyone’s real purpose at school: learning, growing, and preparing for the future.
Mr. Forrister also reminded students that we may never know what another person is carrying. Every person we encounter may be facing struggles that are not visible to us. A safe and successful school community begins when its members choose kindness, empathy, respect, and responsibility.
Finally, students were challenged to invest in their own futures by attending school consistently, working toward academic success, and making the most of the opportunities available to them. Time passes quickly, and being present matters.
At Cherokee County Schools of Innovation, belonging is more than simply sharing a campus. It is a commitment to looking out for one another and building a community in which every student has the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed.
