We received this message in late August of 2022 from mom Dawn Payton:
Hello!! My son, Phenix, has been battling Tcell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia since March of 2020..he had just turned 18, so it was especially hard for him, and us, because that was right when Covid really hit, and since he was considered an “adult” he had to face most of his procedures and treatments by himself because of visitor restrictions😢 He did just “ring the bell” for his last chemo on Aug 1st of this year, but his battle is far from over..he’ll still have many doctors visits, readministration of childhood vaccines(because chemo wiped them all out), he’ll have a port removal surgery, and he’s not considered “cured” until he’s been in remission for 5 years. So, although the worst is hopefully behind us, this journey isn’t over!!..he is a huge Anaheim Ducks hockey fan and a portrait incorporating that somehow would truly make his day!!!..he’s missed out on a lot of life these past 2 and a half years..watching his friends graduate, go off to college, drive, have girlfriends, ect has been very hard on him..but he’s always kept a positive attitude and has been so brave!! He truly is my hero!!..I’ll attach a couple recent pictures and if you have any questions, please message me!..I also understand if the demand for portraits is just too much to give to everyone..I just appreciate that you’re doing this for families like ours!! Thank you!!!
Here at Artists For A Cure we try to accommodate as many families as possible with this gift and sometimes it may take longer than expected. We apologize for the delay.
We took Dawn's advice and created a portrait of Phenix as a member of the Anaheim Ducks.
This is Dawn's message we received along with pics after they had received the painting: We all LOVE the portrait that was done for us!! Huge appreciation to this group and the artists involved!!! And how beautifully this artist captured my son❤️ It’s amazing!!!
Since I contacted you initially, Phenix is thriving!! All of his check ups have been great and he remains in remission 🥰 He’ll still have regular labs for a few more years, but his future looks bright!! He recently got his diploma, which had been delayed by chemo and Covid, and is signed up to begin computer science classes soon!
Thank you again, so much, you you and your artists!! What you do is so appreciated!!
Phenix has since turned 21 years old in January and he has a bright future ahead of him.
