A warning was issued by America's Poison Centers that illnesses linked to kratom and its concentrated derivative, 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH), are rising sharply. Both substances act like opioids and are sold unregulated as powders, teas, capsules, and liquids, with common symptoms including rapid heart rate, breathing trouble, seizures, and loss of consciousness.
Among people exposed to kratom or kratom derivatives alone, 44.5% suffered serious health problems and 25.9% were hospitalized, while 38.8% of 7-OH cases were serious and 20.5% required hospitalization.
U.S. Food and Drug Administration has moved to restrict access to 7-OH, specifically due to its heightened risks. Avoid 7-OH products, keep herbal supplements away from children and pets, consult a doctor or pharmacist before use, and report adverse reactions to Poison Control at 1-800/222-1222.
