The Finger Lakes Trail System, including the Main Trail and all branch, loop, and side trails offers 1,000 miles of hiking. The main FLT is 575 miles long.

The mission of the Finger Lakes Trail Conference is to build, protect, enhance, and promote a continuous footpath across New York The Finger Lakes Trail System includes the main Finger Lakes Trail (FLT) from the Pennsylvania-New York border in Allegany State Park to the Long Path in the Catskill Forest Preserve. There are six branch trails and 29 loop trails and spur trails that extend from the ma

in FLT. These branch, loop and spur trails currently total 412 miles. Including the Main Trail and all branch, loop, and side trails, the Finger Lakes Trail System offers 1,000 miles of hiking. 🎒 Step Beyond the Day Hike: 2026 FLTC Backpacking Treks

Ever wanted to experience the Finger Lakes Trail overnight? This year we're running three guided backpacking treks — small groups, experienced volunteer guides, and a trip for every experience level.

Whether it's your first time carrying a pack or you're a seasoned hiker looking for new ground, we've got a spot for you.

🥾 July 25–26 — Backpacking 101: SOBO to Watson Woods (beginner-friendly, 1 night)
🥾 Aug 28–30 — Backpacking 232: Allegany State Park (experienced, 2 nights)
🥾 Sep 26–27 — Backpacking 101: Sugar Hill to Watkins (beginner-friendly, 1 night)

Every trek includes a recommended packing list, suggested menu, and a pre-trip video call to meet your crew and get all your questions answered before hitting the trail.

⚠️ Trail Closure Update: Map M27

A section of trail between Dry Brook Rd and NYC Rd (CR 27) has been closed due to a loss of permission on private land.

🚫 The trail from Dry Brook Rd to the lean-to and passport route is now out and back only. Please do not continue past the state forest onto private land.

🚫 The parking area on CR 27 is closed and will be updated on future maps.

🔄 Bypass route: Turn right (south) on Dry Brook Rd → turn left (north) onto NYC Rd (CR 27) → continue north to rejoin the trail on the right.

Thank you for respecting landowner boundaries. These closures happen, and how we respond as hikers directly affects whether we keep access to other sections of trail. 🌲

Celebrate Pride Month with us on the Abbott Loop! Join the Finger Lakes Trail for an afternoon of community, conversation, and beautiful views - all LGBTQ+ folks and allies welcome.

We'll hike about 4 miles up to the Pinnacles overlook, take in the views, share some good company, and loop back to the trailhead. Bring a picnic to enjoy together!

Looking for a guided hike with great company and beautiful trails? Our Hiking 101 series has a spot for you. 🥾

Led by experienced hikers who know the Finger Lakes Trail inside and out, these hikes are open to all paces and ability levels, whether you're brand new to the trail, getting back into hiking after a break, new to the area, or just want to explore alongside a friendly group.

A few things to know:
✅ Pre-registration required (one per hike)
✅ Registration opens about 3 weeks before each hike
✅ Hikes are rain or shine
✅ Bring water, snacks, bug spray, sunscreen, and sturdy footwear
✅ Expect uneven terrain, possible creek crossings, and maybe some mud

🛖 $7,000 to go. We're 5 weeks into our $13,000 campaign for the Bush Hill Lean-to, and we've raised $6,000 so far.

This new shelter closes a critical gap on the Finger Lakes Trail and kicks off a long-term effort to build a lean-to within every day's journey along the trail. Every dollar this week keeps our momentum strong heading into the final May push.

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who joined us for this weekend's Cattaraugus County Hike Series outing. There's nothing quite like sharing miles of beautiful trail with this community - new faces, familiar ones, and the steady rhythm of boots on the path. 💚

To our hike leaders, sweep hikers, and bus drivers - thank you. These hikes simply don't happen without you. Your time, your knowledge, and your care are what make the County Hike Series one of the most beloved traditions on the Finger Lakes Trail.

And to every hiker who showed up ready to explore: thank you for being part of it. This year's series carries hikers across roughly 95 miles of Cattaraugus County - scenic rural trails, state forests, ski slopes, and quaint towns - and every county hike is one more stretch behind you

We're excited to introduce a brand-new hiking program for 2026! Join us this summer and fall for guided, family-friendly fossil hunts along the Finger Lakes Trail. Our geologist guide will show you how fossils form, help you ID your finds, and share stories of the prehistoric world hidden beneath your feet.

Perfect for curious kids (ages 5+), nature lovers, homeschool groups, and adults who never outgrew their rock collection. 🪨
