One of the obstacles to education and training children in godliness is the screens that we have allowed to surround us. Smartphones, tablets, and social media platforms have built-in addictive properties that keep people—both young children and parents—distracted from what really matters, and have the dangerous potential to fill young minds with destructive imagery and worldviews.

This semester, we encourage you to go screen-free during school days and see the difference it can make in you and your children’s lives! But you can’t just tuck away the devices without giving children (and yourself) a proper and better substitute. This is where stories enter the picture. Books, real physical, paper and ink books, can be a great first step in renewing children’s minds from the damaging effects of media. About the Story:

Starting a new school year can be an exciting adventure, but also a time of new fears, challenges, and unknowns for both you and your children. So what are some ways you can prepare hearts and minds (including your own) to face the coming school year with excitement, purpose, and joy?

Here are a few things that might be fun to try as you prepare to get back to school!

📘 Go school supply shopping as a family. Give each child a list and a budget, giving them the independence to pick out and purchase the needed supplies themselves.

📚 Gift a new book. Gift an exciting non-fiction story, one of your childhood favorites, a reading journal, or a book about a subject that interests your child with a handwritten note inside to encourage a continued love for reading amidst all the textbooks.

📖 Have each child pick a theme verse. Help your child pick a scripture passage or verse to read every day and memorize during the school year. You can even print the verse out on paper and have them decorate it and hang it on the wall where they will see it everyday.

📝 Make a goals list together. Make time to meet and make a list with each child: What areas do they want to grow in this coming semester? What would they like to accomplish? What character traits do they want God to help them develop? Who or where do they want to serve (church, a nursing home, neighbors)? Write these goals down and set aside a time later in the semester to follow-up on their goals.

Last week concluded our 16th annual Summer Guild event, and what a beautiful week it was! Eighty students came together with teachers and staff to live out this year’s theme, The Making of a Masterpiece, through classes, fellowship, worship, meals shared together, creative performances, morning devotions, and prayer. It was truly (and our staff can attest to this) one of the best Guilds we have ever hosted, and we praise the Lord for His working in each of our lives this last week!

As we continue celebrating America’s 250th anniversary, we’re taking advice from the founding fathers on what kinds of books we should read. In a letter to his nephew, Bushrod, George Washington provided thoughtful counsel regarding the kinds of friendships he should cultivate.

“Be courteous to all, but intimate with few, and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence—true friendship is a plant of slow growth, and must undergo & withstand the shocks of adversity before it is entitled to the appellation.”

We would say that this applies to choosing your books as well! Here at Lamplighter, we are careful in selecting which stories to add to our family collection of rare books. Each title must demonstrate a biblical worldview centered around four truths:

1. God is good.
2. God works all things together for good.
3. God keeps His promises.
4. God allows suffering to grow our character so we can experience His love.

🎆 As we celebrate the semiquincentennial (250th anniversary) of the United States, we are reminded of the values and convictions upon which our country was founded. Our country will only prosper as long as God’s word and God’s ways are diffused among the people—and it starts with us!

James Madison once wrote that, “A diffusion of knowledge is the only guardian of true liberty.” Daniel Webster reinforced this point: “If truth be not diffused, then error will be.” But what kind of truth and knowledge is needed? Solomon, in his wisdom, wrote, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding” (Proverbs 9:10).
