Partnering withe Michigoat, Green Space Romeo and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Romeo, we are hosting a volunteer event to remove woody invasive species while getting a chance to work with the goats 🐐

Seasonal allergies got you down? Oftentimes goldenrod gets the blame for seasonal allergies, due to its plentiful nature and large showy booms. But the real culprit is a much more inconspicuous plant that booms around the same time- ragweed. Although ragweed is native to North America, it often is considered a nuisance due to its tendency to thrive in disturbed environments. Ragweed is known to produce massive amounts of burr shaped, wind dispersed, pollen grains which trigger common seasonal allergy symptoms. Goldenrod on the other hand, produces heavy sticky pollen grains that are actually carried by insects, rather than wind.

Our crews have been hard at work treating Japanese and Giant Knotweed this week! Many homeowners first instinct is to cut it down when they find it growing, this can actually make the problem worse! Japanese knotweed is known to send up new shoots from its vast network of underground tubers in response to stress. Additionally, this tenacious invasive is known to reproduce via fragments left in the soil, so one missed chunk of stem could become a whole new plant! If you do plan to cut your knotweed down, make sure it is followed up with an herbicide application later in the season. Be sure to contact your local CISMA for available treatment options.

Join the Lake St. Clair CISMA, Green Space Romeo, and St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Romeo this Saturday for our next volunteer workday! We will keep clearing out invasive plants and clean up the trail for Festival in the Woods (happening September 26th!).
